Registered Nurse Med Surg Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse med surg in Alabama?
To work as a registered nurse in Alabama, you must hold an active license issued by the Alabama Board of Nursing, which requires completing an accredited ADN or BSN program and passing the NCLEX-RN exam. Alabama participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other compact states can practice without obtaining a separate Alabama license. Most med-surg units expect new hires to complete a structured unit orientation before taking a full patient assignment.
How much do registered nurse med surgs make in Alabama?
Registered nurse med surgs in Alabama earn a median of about $77,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $58,150 for the lowest 10% to over $98,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse med surgs in Alabama?
Alabama registered nurse med surg roles are posted by UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, and Grandview Medical Center and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Large integrated health systems and regional medical centers across the state represent the majority of postings, with academic medical centers in Birmingham and community hospitals in mid-size cities like Dothan and Tuscaloosa also contributing consistently.
Which Alabama cities have the most registered nurse med surg jobs?
Birmingham, Athens, and Gadsden have the most registered nurse med surg openings in Alabama. Birmingham leads because UAB Health System and several large private hospital campuses are based there, while Huntsville's growth as a regional economic hub has expanded Huntsville Hospital's workforce needs, and Mobile anchors coastal Alabama hiring through Infirmary Health and USA Health.
Are there remote registered nurse med surg jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of registered nurse med surg openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which reflects how hands-on bedside nursing is by nature. The small share of remote-adjacent roles typically involves telephone triage, care coordination, or utilization review positions where clinical nursing judgment is applied without direct patient contact.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse med surg in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a nurse residency program, which UAB Health System and Huntsville Hospital both offer for new graduates transitioning into acute care settings. These structured programs provide supervised rotations on med-surg units before full independent assignment. Candidates who hold an active Alabama RN license and a current BLS certification are most competitive, and experience as a patient care technician or nursing assistant in an Alabama hospital often accelerates hiring decisions.
