Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Kentucky?
Kentucky requires dental assistants who perform expanded functions or take radiographs to register with the Kentucky Board of Dentistry, which means completing an accredited dental assisting program and passing the required competency evaluations. For surgical roles specifically, employers prioritize candidates who have completed a dental assisting program at a Kentucky community college or technical school, such as those offered through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, plus a radiography certificate and current CPR credentials.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Kentucky?
Employers hiring surgical dental assistants in Kentucky right now include Norton Healthcare, UofL Health, and Owensboro Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's concentration of dental service organizations and university-affiliated oral surgery clinics, especially in Louisville and Lexington, means openings appear consistently throughout the year rather than only seasonally.
Which Kentucky cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Louisville, Owensboro, and Lexington account for the largest share of surgical dental assistant openings in Kentucky. Louisville leads because it anchors the state's largest hospital systems and dental service organization footprints, while Lexington draws volume from University of Kentucky Health's oral surgery network, and smaller markets like Bowling Green reflect growing suburban practices serving south-central Kentucky's expanding population.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, but they're rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on, chairside role that requires physical presence for every procedure, so remote work is not a realistic option for most positions. About 6% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those exceptions typically involve administrative coordination, patient scheduling, or clinical education roles attached to a dental group rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a dental assisting program through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, which places graduates directly into clinical externships at participating practices. Candidates without surgical experience often start as general chairside assistants at multi-specialty groups like Heartland Dental or University of Louisville Health dental clinics, then cross-train into surgical support roles internally. Earning your Kentucky Board of Dentistry radiography certification before applying gives you a measurable edge over candidates who have not yet completed that credential.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Kentucky?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Kentucky on Migrate Mate, which lists current Kentucky openings from practices and dental groups actively hiring. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
