Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Oklahoma: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma requires dental assistants who perform expanded functions to register with the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry and hold an Expanded Duty Dental Assisting credential. Most surgical roles require completing an accredited dental assisting program, passing the Dental Assisting National Board examination, and completing board-approved expanded duty coursework. Candidates pursuing oral surgery specialties often gain IV sedation monitoring training and surgical assisting experience through externships at Oklahoma dental school clinics or private oral surgery offices.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Oklahoma?
Employers hiring surgical dental assistants in Oklahoma right now include Saint Francis Health System, OU Health, and SSM Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oklahoma's large hospital-affiliated dental programs and multi-specialty oral surgery groups tend to post the most consistent openings across the state.
Which Oklahoma cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Muskogee have the most surgical dental assistant openings in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City leads because of its concentration of hospital systems, academic dental affiliates, and large oral surgery groups, while Tulsa's strong healthcare infrastructure and regional population base support a steady second market for these roles.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Oklahoma?
Yes, but they're rare. Surgical dental assisting is a hands-on, chairside role that requires physical presence in a clinical setting, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 0% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Oklahoma are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those that do qualify typically involve administrative coordination, treatment planning support, or dental consulting functions rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Oklahoma with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to dental assisting externship or new-grad programs at Oklahoma's larger oral surgery practices and hospital-affiliated dental departments, such as those connected to OU College of Dentistry in Oklahoma City. Candidates moving from general dental assisting, sterilization technician, or dental receptionist roles often make the transition by completing targeted oral surgery assisting coursework and highlighting CPR certification and exposure to surgical procedures. Earning the Expanded Duty Dental Assisting credential from the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry before applying gives candidates a clear edge over other new entrants.
