Texas does not require a state-issued license to work as a tailor. Most employers look for a combination of vocational training and hands-on experience, which you can build through programs at Texas community colleges such as those offered by Houston Community College or Dallas College, or through an apprenticeship with a local tailor shop or alterations studio. A strong portfolio of completed garments and demonstrated technique carries significant weight in the Texas hiring process.
How much do tailors make in Texas?
Tailors in Texas earn a median of about $36,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $26,840 for the lowest 10% to over $51,120 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tailors in Texas?
Employers hiring tailors in Texas right now include ABM Industries, Electric Reliability Council Of Texas, and Samsung Electronics, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large retail corridor and active formalwear market mean department stores, bridal boutiques, and bespoke menswear shops are among the most consistent sources of tailor openings across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most tailor jobs?
Taylor, Houston, and Austin have the most tailor openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of their large retail markets, convention-driven demand for formalwear, and concentration of department store flagships, while San Antonio's strong hospitality and military sectors generate steady demand for uniform and workwear tailoring.
Are there remote tailor jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Tailoring is a hands-on trade requiring in-person fittings, fabric handling, and machine operation, so the vast majority of roles are on-site. About 20% of tailor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve design consultation, pattern drafting, or customer service coordination rather than the physical construction work itself.
How can I get hired as a tailor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an alterations assistant role at a Texas department store or dry cleaner with an in-house tailoring department, where you learn finishing and hemming before moving into more complex construction work. Large retailers with Texas locations frequently hire assistants with no prior experience and train on the job. Completing a certificate program through Houston Community College or Dallas College and building a small portfolio of personal or volunteer projects gives you a clear edge over candidates with no formal preparation.
