HVAC Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hvac technician in Texas?
Texas requires hvac technicians to hold a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, or TDLR. Candidates must complete an approved training program or apprenticeship, pass a written exam, and meet experience hour requirements before applying. Most pathways begin with a vocational certificate or associate degree at a Texas community college, followed by on-the-job training under a licensed technician before sitting for the TDLR exam.
How much do HVAC technicians make in Texas?
HVAC technicians in Texas earn a median of about $57,760 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,100 for the lowest 10% to over $81,860 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hvac technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring hvac technicians in Texas right now include Johnson Controls, Trane Technologies, and ENFRA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large commercial construction pipeline and growing data center sector mean these employers tend to post consistently, particularly for roles involving commercial system installation and preventive maintenance.
Which Texas cities have the most hvac technician jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most hvac technician openings in Texas. Houston leads due to its dense concentration of oil and gas facilities, large commercial buildings, and industrial plants, while Dallas-Fort Worth's rapid commercial development and San Antonio's military installations and healthcare campuses generate steady demand for experienced technicians across all specializations.
Are there remote hvac technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. HVAC technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring physical presence to diagnose, install, and service equipment. About 4% of hvac technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those openings typically involve technical support, HVAC system design review, or building automation programming rather than field service work.
How can I get hired as a hvac technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an apprenticeship through a Texas-based mechanical contractor or a union program affiliated with UA Local chapters across Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Large employers like Comfort Systems USA and regional mechanical contractors regularly hire helpers and apprentice-level technicians. Earning an EPA Section 608 certification before applying and completing even a short HVAC certificate program at a Texas community college, such as Houston Community College or Austin Community College, gives candidates a measurable edge over uncertified applicants.
Where can I find and apply to hvac technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to hvac technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience level and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
