HVAC Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hvac technician in California?
To work as an hvac technician in California, you must hold EPA Section 608 certification to handle refrigerants, which is federally required and recognized statewide. Most employers also expect completion of a California-approved apprenticeship through the California Department of Industrial Relations or a trade school HVAC program. For work on larger commercial systems, a California C-20 Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning contractor license may be required for independent or supervisory roles.
How much do HVAC technicians make in California?
HVAC technicians in California earn a median of about $72,560 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,950 for the lowest 10% to over $109,060 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hvac technicians in California?
Employers hiring hvac technicians in California right now include Friendly Franchisees Corporation, 7-Eleven, and ABM Industries, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large commercial real estate sector and strict energy efficiency mandates keep demand from facilities management firms, mechanical contractors, and building services companies consistently high.
Which California cities have the most hvac technician jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose have the most hvac technician openings in California right now. Los Angeles and San Diego generate high volume through their dense commercial construction and large residential markets, while the Bay Area sees strong demand from tech campuses and data centers that require specialized climate control and building automation expertise.
Are there remote hvac technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. HVAC technician work is fundamentally hands-on and site-specific, so most roles require a physical presence at job sites or customer locations. About 2% of hvac technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are typically in project coordination, estimating, or building automation system programming rather than field service.
How can I get hired as a hvac technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a California-based HVAC apprenticeship, such as those offered through local chapters of the Sheet Metal Workers or UA plumbers and pipefitters unions, which combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction. Large mechanical contractors and facilities management firms in California regularly hire helper or maintenance tech assistants for candidates without full experience. Earning your EPA 608 certification before applying gives you a concrete credential that most California employers treat as a minimum baseline.
