Technical Writer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical writer in California?
Technical writing has no state-issued license or certification required to work in California. Most employers hire candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in English, communications, computer science, or a related field, combined with a portfolio of writing samples. Completing a technical communication certificate program at a California community college or university, such as those offered through UC Extension or California State University campuses, can strengthen an application and signal readiness for California's technology and regulated-industry employers.
How much do technical writers make in California?
Technical writers in California earn a median of about $104,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,630 for the lowest 10% to over $175,510 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical writers in California?
Employers hiring technical writers in California right now include Illumio, Robinson Helicopter Company, and SkyRyse, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, defense contractors, and medical device companies creates sustained demand across both large enterprises and mid-size software firms throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most technical writer jobs?
Mountain View, San Jose, and San Diego account for the most technical writer openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area and San Jose draw the largest share because of their density of software companies, hardware manufacturers, and enterprise technology headquarters, while San Diego's defense and biotech sectors drive steady demand for technical writers with regulated-industry and engineering documentation experience.
Are there remote technical writer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Technical writing is a desk-based role centered on research, drafting, and collaboration with distributed engineering teams, which makes it well suited to remote work. About 21% of technical writer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly California technology and software employers have adopted flexible arrangements. API documentation and software user guide roles tend to be the most remote-friendly specialties.
How can I get hired as a technical writer in California with little or no experience?
Building a portfolio of writing samples is the single most realistic first step, even if those samples come from volunteer projects, open-source documentation contributions, or coursework. California community colleges and CSU campuses offer technical communication certificate programs that produce portfolio-ready work. Many California technology and defense employers hire associate technical writers or documentation coordinators as entry points, and candidates who transition from adjacent roles like quality assurance analyst, instructional designer, or customer support specialist frequently move into technical writing without prior documentation titles.
Where can I find and apply to technical writer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to technical writer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California employers. Search the listings on this page, find roles that match your experience and preferred location or work arrangement, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
