Technical Writer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a technical writer in Texas?
Technical writing carries no state-issued license or registration in Texas, so the path runs through education and portfolio. Most Texas employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in English, technical communication, journalism, or a STEM field. The Society for Technical Communication offers the Certified Professional Technical Communicator credential, which Texas-based employers in aerospace, defense, and energy recognize. Building a portfolio of real or sample documents, user guides, or API references is the single most important step before applying.
How much do technical writers make in Texas?
Technical writers in Texas earn a median of about $82,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,590 for the lowest 10% to over $127,920 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire technical writers in Texas?
Employers hiring technical writers in Texas right now include AmeriHome Mortgage Company, Broadcom, and Capgemini, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of aerospace contractors, energy companies, and enterprise software firms means hiring is consistent across multiple sectors rather than tied to a single industry.
Which Texas cities have the most technical writer jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most technical writer openings in Texas. Austin's density of enterprise software and semiconductor firms drives the highest volume, while the Dallas-Fort Worth corridor is anchored by defense contractors and financial technology companies, and Houston's energy and aerospace sector sustains steady demand for compliance and regulatory documentation writers.
Are there remote technical writer jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most fields. Technical writing is a desk-based, document-production role that translates well to remote work, and about 13% of technical writer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. API documentation, software user guides, and knowledge-base writing are the specializations most likely to be fully remote, while regulated-industry roles in aerospace and energy more often require at least partial on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a technical writer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building a portfolio first, then targeting junior or associate technical writer postings at large Texas employers. Dell Technologies, Texas Instruments, and major Houston energy operators regularly post entry-level documentation roles. Transitioning from adjacent positions such as quality assurance analyst, instructional designer, or technical support specialist is common. Completing a STEM degree or obtaining the Society for Technical Communication's entry-level certification strengthens an application when direct documentation experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to technical writer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to technical writer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across Austin, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and beyond. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing.
