Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a therapeutic recreation specialist in New Jersey?
New Jersey does not currently issue a state license for therapeutic recreation specialists, so the primary credential employers recognize is the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist designation awarded by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. Candidates typically complete a bachelor's degree in recreational therapy or a related field, finish a supervised internship, and pass the national certification exam. Many New Jersey hospitals and rehabilitation facilities list this credential as a firm requirement.
Which companies hire therapeutic recreation specialists in New Jersey?
Employers hiring therapeutic recreation specialists in New Jersey right now include Insmed Incorporated, Bristol Myers Squibb, and AbbVie, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Jersey's concentration of major health systems, rehabilitation networks, and behavioral health facilities means openings arise consistently across the state throughout the year.
Which New Jersey cities have the most therapeutic recreation specialist jobs?
New Jersey, Princeton, and Bridgewater have the most therapeutic recreation specialist openings in New Jersey. The distribution reflects the state's large hospital systems and rehabilitation campuses anchoring the Newark and Camden metro areas, while Trenton draws openings from state-operated psychiatric and developmental disability facilities that maintain steady staffing needs.
Are there remote therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, but they're rare. Therapeutic recreation is a hands-on clinical role, so most positions require on-site presence with patients. About 88% of therapeutic recreation specialist openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those exceptions tend to involve program coordination, telehealth consultation, or administrative supervisory functions rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a therapeutic recreation specialist in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a supervised clinical internship at a New Jersey facility, which many programs allow even before graduation. Large employers such as RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health regularly accept practicum students and new graduates into entry-level activity aide or recreational therapy assistant roles. Candidates who hold or are actively pursuing their Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist credential and have experience in adjacent roles such as activity assistant, recreation aide, or direct support professional gain a clear advantage in New Jersey hiring.
Where can I find and apply to therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to therapeutic recreation specialist jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience and credentials, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
