Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Automation Technician
Align your credentials to TN categories
TN classification for Automation Technicians depends on whether your duties map to Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer. Review your degree field against your job description before applying, because a mismatch is the most common denial trigger.
Target manufacturers with recent visa filings
Search job postings at employers with recent visa filings for automation and controls roles. These companies have demonstrated experience with work visa sponsorship and are more likely to be prepared to support TN candidates through the sponsorship process.
Get your engineering credentials evaluated early
If your degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, obtain a formal credential evaluation from a NACES-approved body before you start applying. CBP officers at ports of entry can and do question foreign degree equivalency on the spot.
Request a detailed offer letter before crossing
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at the border, so your offer letter must specify the TN category, proffered duties, required degree, and employment period. A vague letter from HR can result in a same-day denial with no appeal.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching broadly for automation jobs wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN requirements. Migrate Mate filters specifically for companies with TN visa sponsorship history, so you spend your effort on roles where the employer is already prepared to file.
Prepare for Mexican consular processing timelines
Mexican citizens must schedule a consular interview rather than applying at the border. Factor in consulate appointment wait times when negotiating your start date with the employer, and confirm the employer will provide a support letter for the interview.

Find Automation Technician JobsAutomation Technician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automation Technician role qualify for a TN visa?
It depends on your specific job duties and degree. Automation Technician roles that involve designing, programming, or analyzing control systems typically qualify under the Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer TN category. Roles focused primarily on manual equipment maintenance without a degree requirement are less likely to qualify. Your offer letter must document how your duties and credentials meet one of the defined USMCA professional categories.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Automation Technician jobs?
TN is significantly more accessible for Canadians and Mexicans than H-1B. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no petition filed with USCIS for Canadians who apply at the border. H-1B registrations are capped at 85,000 annually with a random lottery. TN status can also be obtained the same day for Canadians, while H-1B approval typically takes months. The trade-off is that TN is restricted to Canadian and Mexican nationals.
What documents do I need for TN sponsorship as an Automation Technician?
You'll need a valid passport, a detailed offer letter from your U.S. employer specifying your TN category and job duties, and proof of your qualifying degree such as transcripts or a diploma. If your degree is from outside North America or is in a field adjacent to your role, a credential evaluation helps. Mexican citizens also need a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate rather than applying at the border.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a TN visa for Automation Technician roles?
Most job postings don't explicitly advertise TN sponsorship, so filtering by employer history is more reliable than filtering by posting keywords. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers with TN visa sponsorship history, which saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering at the offer stage that a company won't support the process. Focus on manufacturers, utilities, and industrial automation firms, which have the most consistent TN filing activity in this field.
Can I switch Automation Technician employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you must obtain new TN authorization before starting work with the new employer. For Canadians, that means either returning to a port of entry with a new offer letter or having the new employer file a change of employer petition with USCIS if you're already inside the U.S. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN status the way an H-1B holder can port under AC21 portability rules.
