Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Developer
Align your title to TN-qualifying categories
TN approval depends on your job title mapping to an approved USMCA occupation. 'Software Developer' and 'Computer Systems Analyst' clear the threshold; 'Product Engineer' or 'Technical Lead' often don't without a strong job description tying the role to systems analysis work.
Build a degree-to-role paper trail
Your degree must directly support the Developer role in your offer letter. A computer science or software engineering degree is clean. An unrelated degree requires a credential evaluation showing technical coursework equivalent to a qualifying field before you approach employers.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Companies that have filed recent work visa petitions for Developer roles already understand visa sponsorship mechanics. Filtering by employers with documented visa filing history cuts your search to companies who won't treat your visa status as a dealbreaker during the offer stage.
Use Migrate Mate to find Developer roles with TN sponsorship
Migrate Mate surfaces Developer jobs from employers with recent visa filings, demonstrating experience with work visa sponsorship under USMCA and other visa programs. This means you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with sponsoring international talent. Search by role and filter for positions that match TN eligibility requirements directly.
Clarify the offer letter format before signing
Canadian citizens present their offer letter at a port of entry instead of attending a consulate interview. That letter must include your title, duties, salary, and start date in a format CBP officers accept. A vague or incomplete letter is grounds for denial on the spot.
Understand Mexican citizens face a separate consulate process
Mexican nationals cannot use the Canadian port-of-entry shortcut. You'll apply at a U.S. consulate, where your employer's offer letter, your credentials, and TN category eligibility all get reviewed together. Scheduling early matters because consulate appointment availability varies significantly by location.

Find Developer JobsDeveloper TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Developer role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the title and duties matter. The USMCA lists 'Computer Systems Analyst' as a qualifying occupation, and USCIS interprets this to include software developers and engineers whose work involves designing, analyzing, or implementing computer systems. A generic 'Developer' title paired with a vague job description can trigger a denial, so your offer letter needs to connect your daily duties explicitly to systems analysis or software development work.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Developer roles?
For Canadian and Mexican developers, TN is faster and far more predictable than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS adjudication wait. Canadian citizens can be approved at a port of entry the same day they present a qualifying offer letter. H-1B requires lottery selection in April and work authorization can't begin until October 1, meaning a successful registration still delays your start by six months or more.
Can I find Developer jobs that already support TN sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search Developer roles specifically from employers with recent visa filings, so you can focus your applications on companies that already understand work visa sponsorship processes rather than educating hiring managers from scratch on every call.
What happens to my TN status if I switch Developer jobs?
Your TN status is tied to your current employer. If you accept a new Developer role, your new employer must support a fresh TN application before you start. Canadian citizens can do this at the border with a new offer letter. Mexican nationals need a new consulate appointment. You cannot transfer TN status between employers the way an H-1B allows portability after 180 days.
Does my degree field affect TN eligibility for Developer roles?
Yes. A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related technical field supports a clean TN application for Developer roles. If your degree is in an unrelated field, such as business or a social science, you'll need a credential evaluation showing your coursework or experience is equivalent to a qualifying technical degree. Gaps between your degree and your job duties are one of the most common reasons TN applications for Developer roles are challenged at entry.
