We’re looking for a Senior Software & Controls Engineer to join an Advanced Systems team developing sophisticated control solutions for mobile and off-highway equipment. This is a hands-on player-coach role for someone who can write controls software while also helping guide the technical execution of the team. You’ll serve as a technical go-to for software and controls projects, help improve development processes and standards, mentor other team members, and remain directly involved in programming, integration, testing, and troubleshooting. This is not a traditional software development role. You’ll work directly with physical machines and across controllers, HMIs, sensors, CAN networks, hydraulics, and other vehicle systems to develop complete customer-specific solutions.
What You’ll Do
- Develop application software for electronic control of mobile and off-highway machines
- Serve as a hands-on technical leader for software and controls projects while continuing to write and troubleshoot code
- Help guide team members, review technical approaches, and support the execution of complex controls projects
- Drive improvements to software development processes, coding practices, testing, requirements, and documentation
- Program using CODESYS, Structured Text, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar controls environments
- Integrate controllers, HMIs, displays, sensors, CAN networks, hydraulics, and other machine systems
- Test, troubleshoot, and validate software in the lab and directly on vehicles
- Develop reusable function blocks and standardized controls solutions
- Work directly with OEM customers to understand machine requirements and develop customer-specific solutions
- Collaborate with hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineers on complete machine solutions
- Mentor and support engineers and technicians as the team's software and controls capabilities continue to grow
- Support customer commissioning and troubleshooting as needed
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of controls, machine controls, embedded controls, or related engineering experience preferred
- Strong hands-on programming experience with CODESYS, Structured Text, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar controls environments
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentor team members, lead projects, or improve engineering processes
- Experience programming controllers used to control physical equipment or machinery
- Strong systems mindset with the ability to understand how software, electronics, controls, hydraulics, and the complete machine interact
- CANBus, J1939, Ethernet, HMI, sensors, or related machine communication experience preferred
- Mobile equipment, off-highway, hydraulics, electrohydraulics, or mechatronics experience strongly preferred
- Ability to translate customer requirements into practical controls and system solutions
- Strong customer-facing communication, troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Associate degree in a technical discipline required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Ability to travel approximately 10%

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Principal Full Stack Engineer
Align your degree to engineering explicitly
TN visa approval for this role hinges on your degree field matching engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline. A business or general IT degree creates adjudication risk even with years of full stack experience behind you.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Employers with recent visa filings for software or systems engineers already understand work visa sponsorship processes. Targeting companies experienced with visa sponsorship reduces the risk of an employer backing out during the TN application process.
Search TN-sponsored roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Principal Full Stack Engineer jobs by verified TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to employers unfamiliar with the USMCA process. Start your search there before reaching out to companies directly.
Prepare a role-specific TN support letter
Your employer's TN support letter must describe how the Principal Full Stack Engineer role meets the specialty occupation definition, not just list job duties. A generic letter citing 'software development' without connecting it to engineering principles is a common CBP rejection trigger.
Clarify Mexican consular timelines before accepting offers
Mexican nationals need a consular appointment, which adds weeks to your start date. Negotiate your start date with this in mind and confirm your employer understands the consular processing window before you sign an offer letter.
Use premium processing strategically for I-129 filings
If your employer files a TN petition via I-129 rather than pursuing CBP port-of-entry admission, USCIS premium processing cuts the decision window to 15 business days. This matters when an employer has a hard project start date.
Principal Full Stack Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Principal Full Stack Engineer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided the role is framed under the Engineer or Computer Systems Analyst occupational category recognized by USMCA. The key is that your job duties must involve engineering-level work, and your degree must align with that field. Roles that blur into product management or general IT coordination can face CBP scrutiny if the letter doesn't clearly establish specialty occupation.
How does TN visa sponsorship for this role compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start working as soon as CBP approves at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires surviving a random lottery and waiting until October 1 of the fiscal year. For a Principal Full Stack Engineer with a matching degree, TN is typically faster and more predictable, though it does not lead directly to a green card.
Where can I find Principal Full Stack Engineer jobs that already sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate specializes in surfacing jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship, including Principal Full Stack Engineer roles. Searching there lets you focus on employers who are already familiar with USMCA documentation rather than spending time educating companies about the process from scratch.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a TN support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, describes your engineering duties in specific terms, confirms your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, states the duration of employment, and identifies your degree as qualifying for the professional category. CBP officers at the border or a consular officer will evaluate whether the letter establishes specialty occupation status.
Can I switch employers as a Principal Full Stack Engineer on a TN visa?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you start working. Canadian citizens can often handle this at a port of entry with a new support letter from the incoming employer. Mexican nationals typically need to return to a consulate. You cannot transfer a TN visa between employers the way an H-1B can be ported under certain conditions.
