Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant
Verify your EFDA certification meets state requirements
EFDA scope varies by state, so confirm your Canadian or Mexican dental assisting credentials align with the specific state's expanded functions license before applying. Some states require additional coursework or exams that take months to complete.
Target multi-location dental group practices
Large dental support organizations and group practices hire EFDAs at volume and often have in-house HR teams familiar with TN sponsorship. Solo private practices rarely navigate TN filings without outside help, so focus your search on groups with dedicated hiring infrastructure.
Request TN sponsorship before accepting any offer
Bring up TN status during the offer stage, not after signing. Ask whether the employer has filed TN petitions before and who handles their immigration paperwork. An employer unprepared for TN documentation will delay your start date by weeks.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to identify dental employers with recent visa filings and sponsorship experience. An employer experienced with work visa sponsorship is far more likely to navigate the TN process correctly and quickly than one doing it for the first time.
Prepare a credential summary document for Canadian land border entry
Canadian citizens can get TN status directly at a port of entry, but CBP officers expect a clear credential packet. Prepare a one-page summary listing your EFDA certification, dental assisting diploma, job offer letter, and the employer's business description to avoid unnecessary delays.
Understand that Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate
Mexican professionals cannot use the port-of-entry TN process. You must apply through a U.S. consulate abroad, which means scheduling a visa interview and meeting consular documentation requirements before you can begin working.

Find Expanded Functions Dental Assistant JobsExpanded Functions Dental Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Expanded Functions Dental Assistant role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, EFDAs can qualify under the TN visa category for dental laboratory technicians or dental assistants, depending on how your employer and the CBP officer classify the role. Your job offer must describe duties consistent with a recognized TN occupation, and your credentials must match. Some applications are classified under allied health occupations, so the offer letter's job description matters significantly.
How does TN visa compare to H-1B for Expanded Functions Dental Assistant positions?
TN is almost always the better path for EFDAs. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and approval can happen at the border or consulate without waiting months for USCIS adjudication. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a lottery that selects only a fraction of applicants each year and takes substantially longer to process. For a role like EFDA, TN removes nearly every barrier the H-1B creates.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a signed job offer letter on company letterhead that specifies your title, duties, the professional nature of the role, your intended start date, and your compensation structure. Some CBP officers also request proof that the employer is a legitimate dental practice, such as a business license or professional registration. The letter is the single most important document in your TN packet.
How do I find dental employers in the U.S. who are open to TN visa sponsorship?
Most dental job postings don't mention visa sponsorship, so you often need to raise it directly with hiring managers. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you identify employers with a history of sponsoring TN and work visa holders. Targeting multi-location dental group practices and DSOs gives you the highest likelihood of finding employers already familiar with the TN process.
Can I switch dental employers while on TN status as an EFDA?
Yes, but your TN authorization is tied to your current employer. You cannot start working for a new dental practice until you obtain a new TN approval reflecting that employer's offer. Canadian citizens can apply at a port of entry for same-day status with a new employer packet. Mexican nationals must return to a U.S. consulate and obtain a new TN visa stamp before starting the new role.
