Verify your credential meets USMCA requirements
TN status requires a baccalaureate degree in accounting or a closely related field. A degree in finance or business with significant accounting coursework may qualify, but prepare a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization if your transcripts aren't in English.
Target employers with dedicated accounting departments
Mid-size and large companies with internal finance teams are far more likely to issue a TN support letter than staffing agencies. Publicly traded firms, multinationals, and companies with Canadian or Mexican parent entities often have experience filing TN paperwork for accountants.
Request an offer letter that names your job duties precisely
CBP officers assess whether your role matches the TN Accountant category. Your offer letter must describe general ledger responsibilities explicitly, such as period-end close, journal entries, and financial statement preparation, not just your job title.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before accepting an offer
Mexican nationals have an annual TN allocation under USMCA. If you're Mexican and the fiscal year allocation is exhausted, your USCIS petition will be queued, so start the filing process early in the U.S. fiscal year, which begins October 1.
Clarify who files before you sign
Canadian professionals can self-petition at a port of entry, but the employer still provides the support letter. Mexican nationals must file through USCIS before starting work. Confirm with your employer which route they'll support and whether they'll cover government filing fees.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsorship-ready employers
Not every accounting employer knows the TN process. Use Migrate Mate to search General Ledger Accountant roles filtered by employers who actively sponsor TN visas, so you're not educating HR from scratch after an offer.

Find General Ledger Accountant JobsGeneral Ledger Accountant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a General Ledger Accountant role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. The USMCA Accountant category covers General Ledger Accountants who hold a baccalaureate degree in accounting or a closely related field. Your offer letter must describe duties that are recognizably accounting in nature, such as journal entries, reconciliations, and period-end close. A title mismatch between your degree and job description can trigger additional scrutiny at the border or from USCIS.
How does TN compare to H-1B for General Ledger Accountant roles?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian nationals, and can be approved the same day at a Canadian port of entry. H-1B requires entering a random lottery held once per year, with selection odds that have historically been well below 50 percent. For a straightforward accounting role with a qualifying degree, TN is faster, more predictable, and renewable indefinitely in two or three-year increments.
Can my employer file the TN petition without an immigration attorney?
Technically yes, but the support letter must be precise. It needs to name the specific accounting duties, confirm the degree requirement, and reference the USMCA Accountant category. Errors in this letter are the most common reason TN petitions get pushed back at the border or receive a Request for Evidence from USCIS. Use Migrate Mate to connect with employers experienced in TN filings, which reduces the risk of a poorly drafted letter.
What documents do I need for a TN approval as a General Ledger Accountant?
You'll need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a detailed employer support letter, and official transcripts or a degree certificate confirming your baccalaureate in accounting or a related field. If your degree is from a non-U.S. or non-Canadian institution, a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization strengthens your application. Canadians present these at a port of entry; Mexican nationals submit them to USCIS with Form I-129.
Can I change General Ledger Accountant employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot start with the new employer until your new TN is approved. Canadians can get a same-day approval at a port of entry with a new support letter from the new employer. Mexican nationals must wait for USCIS to approve the new I-129 petition before beginning work. There is no TN portability rule equivalent to AC21 under H-1B, so timing your transition carefully matters.
