Align your credentials to the Accountant category
TN visa classification for finance managers routes through the Accountant category. Confirm your CPA designation or bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is on your credential documents before applying, since CBP officers assess fit at the port of entry.
Request a support letter that names your duties
Ask your prospective employer to draft a TN support letter listing your specific financial management duties, not a generic job description. CBP scrutinizes vague letters closely for managerial finance roles, so specificity about budgeting, forecasting, and reporting functions matters.
Target employers with dedicated immigration HR teams
Mid-to-large finance departments at publicly traded companies and Big Four-adjacent firms routinely process TN petitions and understand the Accountant category. Employers with no prior TN history may misclassify the role, stalling your offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-eligible manager roles
Search Migrate Mate to surface Manager of Finance positions from employers with recent visa filings and sponsorship experience. Targeting companies that have already sponsored work visas for similar roles cuts time spent on employers unfamiliar with professional visa sponsorship processes.
Prepare for Mexican nationals' consular timeline
Mexican citizens must process through a U.S. consulate and fall under the annual TN allocation. Schedule your consular appointment early and confirm the position qualifies under the Accountant category before your employer finalizes the offer timeline.
Carry original documents for Canadian border crossings
Canadian citizens applying at a port of entry need original transcripts, your CPA certificate, and the employer support letter. Certified copies are not always accepted, and CBP officers will not grant TN status without documentary proof of your finance credentials on the spot.
Manager Of Finance TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Manager of Finance role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position is classified under the Accountant category in the USMCA TN schedule. The role must require a CPA designation or a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, and your actual duties must center on financial management functions such as budgeting, financial reporting, or forecasting. Generalist management roles without a finance-specific degree requirement typically do not qualify.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Manager of Finance positions?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP grants status at the border. H-1B visa requires an employer to register you in the lottery each March, and selection is not guaranteed. For Mexican nationals, TN involves consular processing under an annual allocation, but it still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. TN status is also renewable indefinitely in three-year increments.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead stating your job title, a description of your financial management duties, your start date, your salary, and confirmation that the position requires your specific accounting or finance credentials. The letter is not filed with USCIS in advance for Canadian citizens applying at the border, but CBP officers treat it as the core evidence of TN eligibility.
Where can I find Manager of Finance jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter by occupation and see employers with verified sponsorship history, which is more reliable than sorting through general job postings where TN eligibility is rarely listed. Searching by the Accountant TN category also helps you avoid applying to roles that would not qualify at the border.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa if I receive a better offer?
Yes. TN status is employer-specific, so switching requires your new employer to sponsor a fresh TN. Canadian citizens can obtain new TN status at a port of entry on the day they start with the new employer. Mexican nationals must obtain a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate before beginning work. There is no grace period equivalent to the H-1B 60-day rule, so the timing of your last day and first day matters.
