Match your credentials to TN categories
The TN visa category you qualify under determines which roles you can accept. An accountant TN requires a CPA license or a bachelor's degree in accounting, not just general business credentials. Verify your degree field maps directly to the occupation before applying.
Target employers with recent visa filings
Finance and accounting TN sponsorship requires your employer to prepare a support letter demonstrating your role meets TN eligibility requirements. For Canadians, you'll present this letter at a U.S. port of entry; for Mexicans, at a U.S. consulate. Search for employers with recent visa filings in finance and accounting roles to identify companies experienced with work visa sponsorship.
Prepare a specialty occupation support letter
CBP officers at the port of entry assess whether your role is a qualifying TN occupation. Bring an employer support letter that links your specific duties, such as financial modeling or GAAP compliance work, to the designated TN occupation category.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching for finance and accounting roles with TN sponsorship means filtering out employers unfamiliar with the process. Migrate Mate surfaces companies actively seeking TN-eligible professionals so you spend time on viable opportunities, not cold outreach to unprepared HR teams.
Address Mexican national cap limits early
Mexican professionals have a 5,500 annual allocation for TN visas, unlike the unlimited Canadian pathway. If you're approaching year-end and the allocation is nearing capacity, prioritize your consular appointment and have all documents ready to avoid delays into the next fiscal year.
Negotiate employer-paid filing before signing
Because TN status requires employer support, confirm before accepting an offer that your employer will handle the visa process. Finance roles at smaller firms may have HR teams unfamiliar with TN logistics, so raise this during the offer stage. For Canadians, your employer will need to write a support letter that you'll present at the U.S. port of entry. For Mexicans, your employer will need to write a support letter for your consulate application.
Finance And Accounting TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which finance and accounting job titles qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
The USMCA designates specific occupations, not broad job families. Qualifying titles include accountant, financial analyst, economist, and management consultant. Roles like bookkeeper or accounts payable specialist typically don't qualify because they don't require a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Your offer letter's job title and described duties must align with a recognized TN category.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for finance and accounting professionals?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-year wait for approval. H-1B visa requires registration in a random lottery each spring, and selection isn't guaranteed. For finance professionals who qualify under USMCA occupations, TN offers a faster, more predictable path to U.S. employment without the uncertainty of an annual lottery cycle.
How can I find finance and accounting employers who sponsor TN visas?
Most job postings don't specify TN sponsorship, which makes standard job searches inefficient. Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers experienced with visa sponsorship for finance and accounting roles, so you can filter for companies already familiar with the sponsorship process and more likely to support your entry rather than educating employers from scratch.
Can I switch finance jobs while on TN status without losing my authorization?
TN status is employer-specific. If you change employers, you need a new TN before starting the new role. Canadians can obtain a new TN at the port of entry on the same day with proper documentation. Mexican nationals must schedule a new consular appointment. Don't rely on a grace period the way H-1B holders can under portability rules.
Does a Canadian CPA designation satisfy the credential requirement for a TN accountant?
Yes. A Canadian CPA credential satisfies the licensure requirement for the TN accountant category. If you hold a bachelor's degree in accounting but haven't completed the CPA, you may still qualify based on the degree alone, provided the role requires that educational background. Bring your credential documentation and degree transcripts to the port of entry.
