Match your degree to the role description
TN visa eligibility for Physics requires your degree to align directly with the job duties. A physics degree supporting a data modeling role qualifies; the same degree supporting a general IT position likely does not. Verify the match before applying.
Request a support letter covering TN criteria
Ask your employer to draft a letter confirming your role title as Physicist or Physicist-related, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, the scientific nature of your duties, and your intended length of employment. CBP officers review this document directly.
Search for employers with active research divisions
Target national laboratories, university research departments, semiconductor firms, and defense contractors. These employers routinely hire physics professionals and are more familiar with TN visa sponsorship requirements than general industry employers.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring physics employers
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employer visa filing history, letting you identify companies experienced with sponsoring work visas in physics and related scientific roles. Start your search there rather than filtering manually across generic job databases.
Prepare for port-of-entry review as a Canadian
Canadian citizens can obtain TN status directly at a U.S. land border or airport without a visa stamp. Bring your support letter, degree transcripts, and passport. Processing is same-day but officers may ask detailed questions about your specific physics duties.
File USCIS Form I-129 early as a Mexican national
Mexican nationals must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate, which requires employer-filed Form I-129 and consular scheduling. Build in lead time because consulate appointment availability varies significantly by location and season.
Physics TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Physics degree qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the degree is in physics or a closely related scientific field and the job duties are genuinely scientific in nature. The role must fall within the Scientist category under USMCA. A general business or analyst role supported only by a physics degree may not satisfy the specialty occupation requirement without clear evidence the work requires physics expertise.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Physics professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, making it a more predictable path than H-1B visa. Mexicans face a separate allocation but still avoid the lottery. TN is issued in three-year increments with unlimited renewals, while H-1B has a six-year base limit. The trade-off is that TN does not confer dual intent, so pursuing permanent residency while on TN requires careful planning.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa if I get a new physics job?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you start working. Canadians can obtain this at a port of entry with a new support letter from the incoming employer. Mexican nationals need to file a new I-129 and obtain an updated visa stamp. You cannot simply transfer TN status between employers the way H-1B allows portability under certain conditions.
How do I find physics employers who will sponsor TN visas?
Many physics employers are experienced with visa sponsorship, particularly national labs, research universities, and advanced manufacturing companies, but not all list it explicitly in job postings. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for employers with recent visa filings in scientific roles, which removes the guesswork from identifying sponsorship-friendly employers before you apply.
What happens if my physics role has computational or engineering overlap?
Dual-function roles are common in physics careers. CBP and USCIS evaluate the primary nature of the duties, not the job title alone. If your work is predominantly scientific research, modeling, or experimental physics, the role typically qualifies under the Scientist TN category. Roles that are predominantly software engineering may need to be evaluated under a different USMCA occupation category instead.
