Match your degree to the research discipline
TN visa approval depends on your degree field aligning with the specific research role. A chemistry degree supports a lab research position; a psychology degree supports behavioral research. Mismatches between your credential and the job description are the leading cause of TN denials for research roles.
Request a TN-specific offer letter
Your employer's offer letter must state your professional category, job duties, and intended length of stay. Generic offer letters missing these details create CBP problems at the border. Ask HR explicitly for a letter drafted for TN purposes before your entry appointment.
Target universities and federal contractors first
Universities, national laboratories, and federally funded research institutes routinely sponsor TN workers and have HR teams familiar with the process. Prioritize these employers over early-stage startups, where TN unfamiliarity often stalls or kills the offer.
Search for TN-ready research jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces Research Assistant roles at employers with active TN and work visa filing history, so you're applying to organizations that already understand sponsorship. Filter by discipline and location to find verified opportunities without cold-outreach guesswork.
Prepare credential equivalency documentation early
If your degree is from a Mexican or Canadian institution with a different credit structure, gather official transcripts and a credential evaluation before applying. CBP officers at the port of entry may ask for on-the-spot proof that your degree meets U.S. equivalency standards.
Clarify the Scientific Technician versus professional category distinction
Research Assistant roles can fall under either the Scientific Technician/Technologist category or a discipline-specific professional category such as Biologist or Social Worker. The distinction affects what credentials CBP requires, so confirm with your employer which TN category your specific duties support.
Research Assistant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Research Assistant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the qualifying category depends on your field. Research roles in biology, chemistry, or physical sciences typically fall under the Scientific Technician/Technologist or discipline-specific professional categories. Social science research may qualify under Psychology or Social Worker. Your job duties and degree field must align with the claimed TN category for CBP to approve entry.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Research Assistant positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start as soon as you have a qualifying offer and your documentation is in order. H-1B visa requires entering a randomized lottery with roughly a one-in-four chance of selection, then waiting until October 1 to begin work. For Research Assistant roles that clearly map to a TN category, TN is the faster and more predictable path.
Can Mexican citizens apply for TN status for research jobs the same way Canadians can?
No. Canadian citizens apply directly at a U.S. port of entry or pre-clearance location and can receive TN status on the same day. Mexican citizens must schedule a visa interview at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and apply for a TN visa stamp before traveling. Both pathways require the same underlying documentation: a qualifying offer letter, proof of citizenship, and evidence of your credentials.
Where can I find Research Assistant jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters Research Assistant openings by employers with documented TN and work visa sponsorship activity, so you can identify organizations already comfortable with the process rather than spending weeks cold-contacting employers unfamiliar with TN requirements.
What happens if my Research Assistant duties span multiple TN categories?
CBP requires you to select a single TN professional category that best captures your primary duties. If your role blends lab work with data analysis or social research, your employer's offer letter should emphasize the duties that align most cleanly with one category. Filing under a poorly matched category is a common denial trigger, so it is worth having your employer and a TN-experienced professional review the letter before you travel.
