Frame your degree against SRE criteria
TN visa approval turns on whether your credential maps to Computer Systems Analyst. A degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems clears this cleanly. A business or unrelated degree needs a credential evaluation letter before you apply.
Target employers with recent visa filings
Before submitting applications, review employers with recent visa filings for Computer Systems Analyst roles. This demonstrates they have experience with work visa sponsorship and understand visa processes, making them better-positioned to support your TN petition.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to surface SRE roles from employers with recent visa filings and experience sponsoring work visas. Filter by role and location so you're targeting companies already equipped to handle visa sponsorship, not learning the process from scratch alongside you.
Request an offer letter that matches TN language
Your employer's offer letter must describe your duties in terms that align with the Computer Systems Analyst definition: systems design, reliability analysis, automation architecture. Vague language like 'general IT support' creates delays at the border or consulate.
Distinguish your SRE scope from DevOps or software roles
CBP officers sometimes question whether SRE work is software engineering rather than systems analysis. Your offer letter and resume should emphasize infrastructure reliability, incident response frameworks, and capacity planning over feature development or coding output.
Plan for Mexican citizens' consulate appointment timeline
Mexican nationals must schedule a consulate interview, which adds two to six weeks to the process depending on post availability. Factor this into your start-date negotiation with the employer so you're not committing to a date before your appointment is confirmed.
Site Reliability Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Site Reliability Engineer qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, SRE roles qualify under the Computer Systems Analyst category in the USMCA TN schedule. The classification covers systems design, reliability engineering, automation architecture, and infrastructure analysis. Your offer letter must describe duties in those terms, and your degree must be in a relevant field such as computer science, engineering, or information systems.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for SRE roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start within days of a border crossing approval rather than waiting months for an H-1B visa selection. Mexican citizens face a separate annual allocation but still avoid the lottery. For SRE roles, which map cleanly to Computer Systems Analyst, TN is generally faster and more predictable than H-1B for eligible nationals.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer provides a signed offer letter describing your SRE duties in detail, your title, the duration of employment, and confirmation that you hold a qualifying degree. For Canadians, you present this offer letter at the U.S. border or port of entry—no petition filing is required. For Mexicans, your employer submits the offer letter to the U.S. consulate as part of your TN visa application.
Where can I find Site Reliability Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists SRE roles from employers with recent visa filings, so you're not guessing whether a company is experienced with visa sponsorship generally. Filtering by visa type saves significant time compared to screening general job listings and asking each employer individually whether they're willing to support your TN application.
Can I switch SRE employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but TN status is tied to a specific employer and role. When you change jobs, your new employer must support a fresh TN filing before or at the time you start. Canadians can do this at a port of entry with a new offer letter. Mexicans need a new consulate appointment. You cannot carry your existing TN to a new employer the way H-1B portability works.
