Key Responsibilities:
- Implement unit-level control logic for PCS, BESS, generators, SSTs, and balance-of-plant equipment
- Develop startup, shutdown, fault handling, and recovery sequences with deterministic behavior
- Implement grid-code required functions including voltage control, frequency response, LVRT/HVRT, and protection coordination
- Develop and tune GFL and GFM control modes including active/reactive power control and ramp-rate limits
- Implement local safety limits, interlocks, fallback logic, and protective functions
- Ensure proper prioritization and coordination of commands between unit controllers, real-time controllers, and EMS
- Validate control firmware through simulation, SIL, HIL, factory testing, and field commissioning support
- Support certification, type testing, and utility or regulatory compliance demonstrations
- Troubleshoot field issues and support commissioning activities
- Document control logic, state machines, configuration parameters, and known limitations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Controls, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 3–7+ years of experience in control firmware implementation for PCS, inverters, or unit controllers
- Strong understanding of inverter-based resource behavior and utility grid codes
- Experience with PLCs, embedded controllers, or real-time control platforms
- Familiarity with dynamic simulation and validation tools such as PSCAD or equivalent
- Strong debugging, system integration, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Professional working proficiency in English; additional languages are a plus

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Firmware Engineer
Align your credentials to TN Engineer categories
TN visa status for Firmware Engineers typically requires a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Gather your transcripts and, if your degree title is non-standard, a credential evaluation letter that maps your field of study to a qualifying USMCA category.
Target employers with embedded hardware products
Companies shipping physical products with onboard processors, medical devices, automotive ECUs, consumer electronics, have recurring firmware headcount and understand TN sponsorship logistics. Filter job searches by industry, not just job title, to find employers whose product roadmap demands dedicated firmware staff.
Clarify TN eligibility before negotiating an offer
TN status requires that your role genuinely fits a qualifying USMCA category. Before you accept an offer, ask your hiring manager to confirm the job description references engineering-level responsibilities. A title of 'Firmware Developer' without degree-level duties can create problems at the port of entry or consulate.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready firmware roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify Firmware Engineer openings at employers already familiar with TN sponsorship. Narrowing your search to those employers cuts the time you spend educating hiring teams on USMCA requirements during the offer stage.
Prepare a TN support letter that maps your work to the visa category
Your employer's support letter must connect your specific firmware responsibilities to the qualifying USMCA occupation. A letter that describes generic software tasks rather than embedded systems engineering work gives a CBP officer or consular officer reason to question the classification.
Understand the port-of-entry process if you are Canadian
Canadian citizens adjudicate TN status at the border with no visa stamp required. Bring your employer support letter, degree credential, and job offer documentation. CBP can approve or deny on the spot, so your paperwork must clearly support the Engineer classification before you travel.
Firmware Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Firmware Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the role fits within a recognized USMCA professional category such as Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer. The job duties must require a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field like electrical engineering or computer engineering. Roles that blend firmware with general software development are still qualifying as long as engineering-level responsibilities dominate the position.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Firmware Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition for Canadian applicants, approval can happen the same day at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection, a full USCIS petition, and months of processing time. For a Firmware Engineer with a qualifying degree and a clean-cut job offer, TN is almost always faster and more predictable than H-1B.
How can I find Firmware Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate specializes in TN visa job listings and lets you filter specifically for roles compatible with USMCA sponsorship. Searching through a general job board often means reaching out to employers who have never processed TN status, which adds friction during offer negotiations. Focusing on employers already familiar with TN logistics saves significant time in your search.
What documents do I need to apply for TN status as a Firmware Engineer?
You need a signed employer support letter describing your job duties and linking the role to a USMCA qualifying occupation, your degree transcripts or diploma, and proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship. Mexican citizens also need a valid TN visa stamp from a U.S. consulate before traveling. CBP reviews all of these at the port of entry for Canadian applicants.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as a Firmware Engineer?
Yes, but you must secure a new employer offer and initiate a new TN filing before starting work with the new company. Canadian citizens can present new documentation at a port of entry or apply for a change of status through USCIS. Your existing TN status does not automatically transfer, and you cannot begin work with the new employer until the new TN is approved.
