Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Lead
Align your credentials to the right TN category
Technical Lead roles don't map to a single TN occupation. Your duties, degree field, and job title together determine whether you qualify under Computer Systems Analyst, Engineer, or another listed category. Misalignment at this stage is the most common reason for TN denials.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Search for companies with recent visa filings in technical and engineering roles. These employers are already experienced with visa sponsorship and understand the documentation requirements needed to support work visa candidates.
Prepare a duties letter before your first offer
Ask your prospective employer to draft a detailed duties letter before you cross the border or file. The letter must connect your Technical Lead responsibilities to the TN category by name. Vague descriptions like 'managing a team' are insufficient for CBP.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Filter Technical Lead roles by TN visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate so you're only applying to positions where the employer is already prepared to support your status. This cuts the back-and-forth that kills offers late in the process.
Negotiate who files before accepting the offer
Canadians can self-petition at the port of entry, but Mexican nationals must go through consular processing. Clarify before signing whether your employer will handle the I-129 filing or expect you to appear at the border independently.

Find Technical Lead JobsTechnical Lead TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Lead role actually qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is defined. Technical Lead is not a listed TN occupation, but the underlying duties often qualify under Computer Systems Analyst or Engineer categories. Your employer's duties letter must describe your specific responsibilities in terms that map to one of those USMCA-listed occupations. A title alone won't get you through CBP.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Technical Lead positions?
For Canadian professionals, TN is significantly more practical than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap, and Canadians can get TN status same-day at a port of entry. H-1B requires employer sponsorship, a lottery selection, and months of USCIS processing. Mexican nationals face more constraints with TN's 5,500 annual cap, but the process is still faster than waiting for an H-1B lottery result.
Where can I find Technical Lead jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Technical Lead roles filtered by TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-applying to employers who've never sponsored a TN professional before. Starting with employers who have existing TN experience avoids the most common delay in the hiring process.
Can I switch employers as a Technical Lead on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. Before you start with a new company, that employer must either file an I-129 change of employer petition with USCIS or you must re-enter the U.S. at a port of entry with new documentation from the incoming employer. You can't begin work for the new employer until that step is complete.
What documentation does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter that includes the TN occupation category being claimed, a description of your Technical Lead duties tied to that category, your anticipated start date, the employment duration, and your compensation terms. For Mexican nationals, this documentation supports the consular interview. For Canadians, CBP officers review it at the port of entry. Incomplete letters are the leading cause of same-day TN refusals.
