Transportation Manager Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a transportation manager job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's three strongest hiring pockets: the O'Hare corridor for air freight and logistics providers, the Near West Side and McCook industrial belt for distribution and trucking operations, and the Loop for corporate supply chain and fleet management roles. Candidates with experience in multimodal freight, TMS platforms, and DOT compliance move faster here. Networking through the Chicago Logistics Council and targeting retailers, food manufacturers, and 3PL operators gives you a concrete edge in this market.
Which companies hire transportation managers in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring transportation managers in Chicago include Stantec, GFT, and CDM Smith, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's hiring base is especially deep among national retailers with Midwest distribution hubs, large 3PL operators anchored near O'Hare, and food and beverage companies with regional fleet operations.
Are there remote transportation manager jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but only selectively. Transportation management is largely an on-site role when it involves warehouse operations, fleet oversight, or carrier dispatch, though planning, analytics, and vendor management functions can run remotely. About 33% of transportation manager openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to sit with corporate supply chain teams in the Loop rather than with operational logistics employers near O'Hare.
How can I get a transportation manager job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through a logistics coordinator or dispatch role at a 3PL operator or regional carrier near the O'Hare corridor, where internal promotion into management is common. Chicago-area retailers and food distributors also hire traffic coordinator positions that build the carrier negotiation and TMS skills managers need. Completing a supply chain certificate through a Chicago-area community college and getting hands-on with routing software will accelerate the transition.
Which industries hire the most transportation managers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most transportation managers in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Technology & Software, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a major rail, highway, and air freight hub means those sectors maintain large, permanent transportation management teams rather than hiring only for project-based or seasonal needs.
