What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in transportation manager jobs.
- Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, or a related field
- 3 to 5 years of experience managing transportation or fleet operations
- Familiarity with transportation management systems such as Oracle TMS or SAP TM
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations, hours-of-service rules, and CSA compliance
- Experience managing carrier relationships and negotiating freight contracts
- Proficiency in analyzing KPIs such as on-time delivery rates and cost per mile
Tips for Your Transportation Manager Job Search
Quantify your fleet and cost outcomes
Hiring managers for transportation roles expect numbers. Pull actual figures from your experience: fleet size you managed, on-time delivery rates you maintained, or fuel costs you reduced. Vague claims about improving efficiency will not separate you from other candidates.
Target openings by freight mode
Transportation manager roles vary sharply by mode: LTL, FTL, intermodal, and last-mile all use different tools and carrier relationships. Filter your search by the mode you know best so you are applying to roles where your day-one value is obvious to the hiring team.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists transportation manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your resume for TMS platforms
Many job descriptions screen for specific transportation management system experience. Name the exact platforms you have used, such as Oracle TMS, MercuryGate, or SAP TM, early in your resume summary. A generic 'proficient in TMS software' line does not pass applicant tracking system filters.
Prepare for operations scenario questions
Transportation manager interviews almost always include a scenario round: a shipment delayed, a carrier failing mid-route, or a compliance audit coming up fast. Walk through two or three real situations you resolved, naming the specific decision you made and what the outcome was.
Negotiate using DOT compliance value
When discussing compensation, frame your knowledge of DOT hours-of-service rules and CSA scores as a direct cost-avoidance asset. Employers who have faced violations understand that a manager who prevents fines and audits saves more than a generic operations hire delivers.
Transportation Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most transportation managers?
The companies hiring the most transportation managers right now include Alvarez & Marsal, MV Transportation, and HDR, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Retail distribution, third-party logistics providers, and large manufacturers tend to post the highest volume of these roles year-round.
How many transportation manager jobs are remote?
About 24% of transportation manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most office-based management roles because many positions require on-site oversight of drivers, docks, or fleet operations. Sub-areas like freight procurement, carrier relations, and network planning are the most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a transportation manager?
Most transportation managers start in dispatcher, logistics coordinator, or fleet supervisor roles and build up from there. A degree in supply chain, logistics, or business helps, and certifications like the APICS CSCP or a DOT-related compliance credential strengthen your profile. Moving into management typically requires demonstrating you can own carrier relationships, control costs, and hit delivery KPIs consistently.
Can you get hired as a transportation manager without direct management experience?
Yes, especially if you have deep operational experience as a dispatcher, logistics analyst, or senior coordinator. Emphasize any informal leadership you have done, such as training new hires, covering for a manager, or owning a specific lane or carrier relationship. Smaller carriers and regional distributors are more likely than large enterprises to promote from strong individual contributors without a formal management title on record.
What does the transportation manager interview process look like?
Most processes run two to four rounds. The first is typically a recruiter screen focused on experience level and logistics background. The second is an operations interview with a hiring manager or VP of supply chain, where scenario-based questions about carrier failures, compliance issues, and cost overruns are common. Final rounds often include a panel with cross-functional stakeholders such as warehouse or procurement leadership.
Where can I find and apply to transportation manager jobs?
You can find and apply to transportation manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience in fleet management, freight operations, or supply chain, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
