Transportation Project Manager Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a transportation project manager job in Chicago?
Focus your search on the Loop, where most engineering consultancies and transit agencies are headquartered, and on the Near North Side, where infrastructure-focused firms cluster. The Chicago Department of Transportation, the Chicago Transit Authority, and regional planning organizations are consistent employers. Candidates with experience on CTA or Metra capital programs, familiarity with IDOT procurement processes, and a PMP certification tend to move fastest through local hiring pipelines.
Which companies hire transportation project managers in Chicago?
Chicago transportation project manager roles are posted by Stantec, GFT, and CDM Smith and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The Chicago market draws heavily from large engineering consultancies, public transit authorities, and city and county infrastructure offices that manage ongoing capital improvement programs.
Are there remote transportation project manager jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but with real limits: transportation project management is largely field-dependent, so fully remote roles are less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 33% of transportation project manager openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, concentrated in planning, scheduling, and stakeholder coordination functions. Site oversight and contractor management roles almost always require an on-site presence.
How can I get a transportation project manager job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a project coordinator or assistant PM role with a Chicago-area engineering consultancy or a city infrastructure office. The Chicago Department of Transportation and the Chicago Transit Authority both hire junior staff for capital program support. Building familiarity with local transit priorities, such as CTA bus rapid transit or Metra modernization, and earning an entry-level PMP credential gives candidates a concrete edge with Chicago employers.
Which industries hire the most transportation project managers in Chicago?
The sectors hiring the most transportation project managers in Chicago are Consulting & Professional Services, Technology & Software, and Retail, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a national rail hub and its ongoing CTA and Metra capital investment programs make public transit and civil infrastructure the dominant drivers of local demand.
