Senior Level Underwriter Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a senior level underwriter job?
Employers hiring at the senior level look for candidates who can own underwriting decisions end-to-end, not just execute them. Demonstrating experience managing a book of business, developing underwriting guidelines, and mentoring junior staff gives candidates a clear edge. Specialization in a complex line, such as excess and surplus, reinsurance, or specialty commercial, is a strong differentiator at this stage.
Which companies hire senior level underwriters?
Companies hiring senior level underwriters right now include Travelers, AmeriHome Mortgage Company, and Alliant Insurance Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a mix of major carriers, Lloyd's syndicates, regional insurers, and specialty managing general agents that need experienced underwriters to lead lines of business and manage broker relationships.
Are there remote senior level underwriter jobs?
Yes, though availability varies by line of business and employer. About 46% of senior level underwriter openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting insurer appetite for experienced talent regardless of location. Specialty and surplus lines roles, as well as reinsurance positions, tend to offer more location flexibility than standard personal or commercial lines.
What makes an underwriter role senior level?
A senior level underwriter role is defined by autonomous decision-making authority, accountability for portfolio performance, and leadership responsibility. Senior underwriters set underwriting strategy for a line or territory, approve risk outside standard guidelines, and mentor or review the work of junior colleagues. The role centers on owning outcomes, not just processing submissions.
Which industries hire the most senior level underwriters?
Senior level underwriter roles concentrate in Insurance, Banking & Financial Services, and Investment & Asset Management, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive hiring because they involve large, complex, or specialized risks that require experienced judgment, deep product knowledge, and established broker or client relationships that a senior underwriter brings.
