Which companies sponsor visas for application engineers in California?
Large enterprise software and hardware companies are the most consistent sponsors. Salesforce, Adobe, ServiceNow, Palo Alto Networks, Qualcomm, and Applied Materials have well-established immigration programs and regularly file H-1B visa petitions for application engineer roles. Semiconductor and cloud infrastructure firms in the Bay Area and San Diego tend to have dedicated HR teams experienced with the sponsorship process, which can make the overall timeline more predictable.
Which visa types are most common for application engineer roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for application engineers in California, given that the role typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. Candidates already in the U.S. on F-1 OPT or STEM OPT can work while an H-1B petition is pending. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and a shorter processing timeline.
Which cities in California have the most application engineer sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose and Santa Clara, accounts for the largest share of application engineer sponsorship activity in California, driven by the concentration of enterprise software, semiconductor, and cloud companies in Silicon Valley. Los Angeles has a growing presence in media technology and aerospace, while San Diego is a strong market for application engineers in telecom hardware, biotech instrumentation, and defense electronics.
How to find application engineer visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can search for application engineer roles in California without sorting through postings that don't offer sponsorship. Because application engineer positions vary widely between pre-sales, integration, and embedded systems contexts, using Migrate Mate's role-specific filters helps you identify openings that match your technical background and the type of sponsorship support you need.
Are there state-specific factors that affect visa sponsorship for application engineers in California?
California's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor rules tend to reflect the state's higher cost of living, particularly in the Bay Area and Los Angeles metro. Employers filing an H-1B Labor Condition Application must certify they'll pay at least the prevailing wage for the role and location, which often means California-based application engineer positions carry higher documented salary floors than the same title in other states. Many employers in California also source application engineer candidates through university pipelines at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored application engineer jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
