Intuit Credit Karma is looking for a results-oriented and strategically innovative Staff AI Scientist to lead the evolution of our recommendation engines from static eligibility matching to dynamic, intent-aware personalization. You will architect the systems that determine which financial products are shown to 100M+ members, balancing immediate monetization with long-term member trust.
As the Tech Lead, you will drive the technical vision for our user understanding and recommendation stacks. You will mentor junior scientists, set the standard for experimental rigor, and partner with senior leadership and product teams to define the future of our members’ financial journey.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for building and scaling machine learning models that identify user intents, financial journey, engagement patterns, as well as lead the evolution of our recommendation and ranking systems across a diverse ecosystem of financial products
- Serve as the primary technical authority for data science teams. Partner with product to define the multi-year roadmap, ensuring technical feasibility for "Big Bet" initiatives, and collaborate with engineering to ensure modeling advances are matched by scalable, low-latency production infrastructure
- Act as a "Force Multiplier" by setting coding and modeling standards, conducting deep-dive reviews, and fostering a culture of scientific excellence across the organization.
- Impact at Scale: Your models will influence the financial journeys of millions of members, balancing immediate conversion with long-term trust and value.
- Strategic Influence: You will play a key role in defining how Credit Karma prioritizes its diverse ecosystem of financial verticals through data-driven frameworks.
- Technical Growth: You will work with one of the richest datasets in fintech to solve complex problems in multi-objective optimization and predictive modeling.
Qualifications
- MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or a related quantitative discipline
- 7+ years of industrial experience in Machine Learning, with 3 years in a technical lead capacity specifically focused on Ranking, Search, or Recommendation Systems.
- Proven track record of designing and deploying high-scale, multi-stage ranking pipelines in a production environment.
- Exceptional ability to communicate technical complexity to executive leadership and influence stakeholders across product, business and engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
- Personalization & Ranking: Experience with multi-objective optimization and ranking systems that manage competing business and user goals.
- Lifecycle Modeling: Familiarity with survival analysis, time-series forecasting, or sequence-to-sequence modeling to predict user actions over time.
- Business Acumen: Ability to translate high-level business goals into rigorous mathematical objective functions.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and drive organizational alignment.

Which companies sponsor visas for artificial intelligence scientists in California?
Google, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA are among the most active H-1B sponsors for artificial intelligence scientist roles in California. DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data consistently shows these employers filing for AI-related job titles at California addresses. Semiconductor and cloud infrastructure companies in Silicon Valley also appear frequently in sponsorship filings for research-focused AI positions.
Which visa types are most common for artificial intelligence scientist roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for artificial intelligence scientists in California. Artificial intelligence scientist roles typically satisfy the specialty occupation requirement because they demand at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a closely related field. Candidates with extraordinary research records may also qualify for the O-1A. Australians can use the E-3, which has no lottery and shorter wait times than the H-1B.
Which cities in California have the most artificial intelligence scientist sponsorship jobs?
The San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, Mountain View, Menlo Park, and San Francisco itself, accounts for the largest concentration of artificial intelligence scientist sponsorship roles in California. Los Angeles has grown significantly as a secondary hub, driven by entertainment tech, autonomous vehicles, and applied AI startups. San Diego hosts AI research tied to biotech and defense contractors, and is worth considering alongside the major Bay Area employers.
How to find artificial intelligence scientist visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, making it easier to identify artificial intelligence scientist openings in California without sorting through positions that exclude international candidates. You can browse by role and state to surface active listings from employers with documented H-1B or other sponsorship history. Because sponsorship availability isn't always stated upfront in job postings, using a platform built around sponsorship data saves considerable research time.
Are there any California-specific considerations for artificial intelligence scientists seeking visa sponsorship?
California's prevailing wage requirements under H-1B rules reflect the state's high cost of living, so employers must pay wages benchmarked to California wage levels rather than national averages. California is also home to several universities, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UCLA, that produce significant pipelines of AI researchers who transition from OPT into sponsored roles. The density of AI-focused venture-backed companies in the Bay Area also means sponsorship is more normalized here than in most other states.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored artificial intelligence scientist jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
