Which companies sponsor visas for legal interns in California?
Large law firms with California offices, including Latham and Watkins, Skadden, Gibson Dunn, and Morrison Foerster, are among the most active sponsors for legal intern roles. Major technology companies with sizable in-house legal departments, such as Google, Apple, and Meta, also sponsor international legal interns. Sponsorship is more common at large firms and corporations than at boutique or regional practices.
Which visa types are most common for legal intern roles in California?
The H-1B is the most common visa for legal intern roles that convert to full-time attorney positions, though it requires a qualifying specialty occupation and is subject to the annual lottery. J-1 exchange visitor visas are frequently used for law student internships through accredited exchange programs. F-1 students may work under OPT or CPT authorization during their internship without requiring employer sponsorship for that stage.
Which cities in California have the most legal intern sponsorship jobs?
Los Angeles and San Francisco account for the largest share of legal intern sponsorship opportunities in California. Los Angeles draws interns to entertainment law, litigation, and real estate practices, while San Francisco and Silicon Valley attract candidates interested in technology, venture capital, and intellectual property law. San Diego has a smaller but active market, particularly in biotech and patent law.
How to find legal intern visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate filters legal intern roles in California specifically by visa sponsorship availability, saving you from manually screening hundreds of postings. Search the Migrate Mate job board and filter by state and role to see law firms and in-house legal teams currently hiring sponsored interns in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and beyond. Setting up alerts helps you catch new postings at major California firms as soon as they go live.
Are there state-specific considerations for legal intern sponsorship in California?
California's Bar rules require legal work to be supervised by a licensed attorney, which affects how intern roles are structured and classified for visa purposes. Roles at California-based law schools through clinical programs sometimes offer J-1 pathways through university-sponsored exchange programs. The state's concentration of technology and entertainment industries also shapes which practice areas see the highest demand for internationally sponsored legal interns.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored legal intern jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
