Which companies sponsor visas for legal interns in Illinois?
Large law firms headquartered in Chicago, including Kirkland & Ellis, Sidley Austin, Mayer Brown, and Winston & Strawn, have the strongest track records for sponsoring international legal talent. Corporate legal departments at Illinois-based multinationals such as Abbott, Motorola Solutions, and Boeing also hire legal interns and have established immigration support infrastructure. Smaller regional firms are less likely to sponsor.
Which visa types are most common for legal intern roles in Illinois?
Most international students completing legal internships in Illinois use F-1 OPT or CPT, which allows work authorization without employer-sponsored petitions. For roles converting to full-time positions, H-1B is the most common employer-sponsored pathway, though it requires a lottery selection. J-1 intern or trainee visas are also used, typically administered through a designated sponsor organization rather than the employer directly.
Which cities in Illinois have the most legal intern sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of legal intern sponsorship opportunities in Illinois. The Loop and surrounding downtown neighborhoods house the state and federal courts, Am Law 100 firm offices, and large corporate headquarters that drive demand for legal interns. Springfield has limited opportunities tied to state government and smaller regional practices, but sponsorship there is uncommon.
How to find legal intern visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship roles, including legal intern positions in Illinois. You can filter by state and role to surface employers who have a history of sponsoring international hires. Focusing your search on Chicago-based Am Law 200 firms and large corporate legal departments through Migrate Mate gives you the most practical starting point for sponsorship-eligible internships.
Are there state-specific or role-specific considerations for legal interns seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
Illinois does not impose additional state-level work authorization requirements beyond federal visa rules, but legal interns should be aware that law school enrollment status often determines CPT or OPT eligibility. Chicago's deep concentration of Big Law firms means competition is high. Many firms recruit through their 1L and 2L summer associate pipelines, so candidates enrolled in ABA-accredited law schools with strong Chicago ties, such as University of Chicago Law and Northwestern Pritzker, tend to have an advantage.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored legal intern jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
