Lead AI/ML Engineer / Manager – AI Engineering
Department: AI Engineering
Location: Denver, CO (In-person interview required)
Employment Type: Contract
Experience Required: 8+ Years Management | 8+ Years ML/Data Science
Role Overview
R Systems International is looking for a Manager of AI Engineering who brings a rare combination of deep hands-on AI/ML delivery experience and demonstrated people leadership. This is not a research role — we are seeking someone who has delivered real, production-grade AI/ML systems in industry and is now ready to lead teams that do the same. You will drive technical vision, build high-performing engineering teams, and ensure AI solutions move from concept to production reliably and at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and grow a team of AI engineers working on production LLM, RAG, and ML systems.
- Define and drive the technical vision for AI engineering — from architecture decisions to tooling choices and coding standards.
- Own end-to-end delivery of AI/ML models into production: scoping, design, build, deployment, and monitoring.
- Partner with Data Science, Data Engineering, Product, and Business stakeholders to align AI engineering work with strategic priorities.
- Mentor and develop engineers — conducting code reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and career development conversations.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices: CI/CD, MLOps, model monitoring, responsible AI, and documentation.
- Evaluate new LLM frameworks, RAG architectures, and agentic patterns and advise on their adoption.
- Communicate technical progress, risks, and blockers clearly to senior leadership and cross-functional partners.
Experience
- 8+ years of management experience leading technical teams in ML, AI, or data engineering.
- 8+ years of hands-on ML/Data Science experience in industry (production delivery, not research).
- 4+ years of LLM experience: fine-tuning, RAG, prompt engineering, and agentic system design.
- Proven track record of delivering AI/ML models into production environments at enterprise scale.
Leadership & Communication
- Strong ability to mentor engineers and build high-performing, collaborative teams.
- Demonstrated ability to drive technical vision and influence across organizational boundaries.
- Excellent communication skills — able to translate complex AI/ML concepts for both technical and business audiences.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, or a related technical field. Master's or PhD preferred.

Which companies sponsor visas for AI ML engineers in Colorado?
Several large employers in Colorado have established track records of sponsoring work visas for AI and ML engineers. Google's Boulder office, Amazon Web Services, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Oracle all appear in Department of Labor LCA filings for AI and ML-related roles in the state. Smaller Denver-based tech companies and defense contractors also sponsor, though less frequently and with more variable processes.
Which visa types are most common for AI ML engineer roles in Colorado?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa category for AI and ML engineers in Colorado, as these roles typically require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field, meeting the specialty occupation standard. Candidates with extraordinary recognition in the field may qualify for the O-1A. Some Canadian and Mexican nationals working in AI roles pursue the TN visa under the engineer or scientist category.
How to find ai ml engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Colorado?
Migrate Mate filters AI and ML engineer job listings specifically to Colorado and flags roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship. Rather than sorting through hundreds of general postings, you can focus on Colorado-based AI and ML positions from companies that have filed LCAs for similar roles. This saves significant time compared to manually cross-referencing job boards with Department of Labor disclosure data.
Which cities in Colorado have the most AI ML engineer sponsorship jobs?
Denver and Boulder account for the large majority of AI and ML engineer visa sponsorship activity in Colorado. Boulder benefits from proximity to CU Boulder's computer science and data science programs, attracting research-oriented roles. Denver's broader tech and defense contractor presence drives higher overall hiring volume. Colorado Springs also has sponsorship activity, primarily through defense and aerospace employers like Northrop Grumman and L3Harris.
Are there state-specific factors that affect AI ML engineer visa sponsorship in Colorado?
Colorado's strong aerospace and defense sector means a meaningful share of AI and ML roles require security clearances, which can complicate or effectively exclude sponsorship for international candidates without existing work authorization. The state's active university ecosystem, particularly CU Boulder's OPT pipeline, means many employers are already familiar with visa sponsorship for technical roles. Prevailing wage requirements for Colorado metros are set by the Department of Labor and apply to all H-1B filings statewide.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored ai ml engineer jobs in Colorado?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
