INTRODUCTION
We are building the foundation for next-generation decentralized grid operations—distributing intelligence to the resilient edge to enable autonomous, self-healing, and adaptive grid management.
As a Senior Software Engineer & Scientist (Virtual Sensing), you will develop edge-native software, advanced virtual sensing algorithms, and intelligent control systems that bridge physics, AI, and distributed computing. This is a high-impact, hands-on role in a startup-style, fast-moving environment within GE Vernova’s CTO organization. You will report directly to the Electrification Chief Architect and collaborate across simulation, real-time edge deployments, and field validation to transform how the grid senses and responds.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Edge Engineering & Data Pipelines
- Build and deploy edge-native software components for decentralized operation, sensing, and control.
- Develop federated data pipelines that allow distributed nodes to collaborate securely without central coordination.
- Integrate field data sources (SCADA, PMUs, DER controllers) and industrial IoT protocols (LoRa, MQTT, DNP3, Modbus).
Virtual Sensing & Control
- Develop and deploy robust virtual sensing algorithms to infer critical power grid parameters (e.g., voltage stability, phase angles, line temperature, asset health) from limited edge sensor data.
- Deploy adaptive edge intelligence and control logic to enable real-time grid insights with minimal latency.
- Apply control theory and signal processing techniques (e.g., Kalman filters, state estimation) to refine virtual sensor accuracy.
Simulation & Integration
- Collaborate with power systems engineers to validate virtual sensor performance against physical models and real-world field data.
- Bridge the gap between simulation environments and live grid operations to "close the loop."
- Integrate AI/ML capabilities, federated control frameworks, and digital twins into next-generation grid platforms.
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Required Skills
- Software Engineering: Proficiency in Python, Go, or Rust (backend/edge) and TypeScript/React or Angular (UI).
- Edge/Cloud Infrastructure: Deep experience with Kubernetes/K3s, Kafka/NATS, MQTT, gRPC, and Pulsar.
- Data & Observability: Hands-on experience with InfluxDB/TimescaleDB and observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana).
- Domain Expertise: Proven experience with federated architectures, resilient edge software, and Transmission & Distribution (T&D) applications.
- Scientific Aptitude: Strong understanding of signal processing, control theory, and state estimation methods.
- AI/ML: Experience developing and deploying AI/ML models in production environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 5+ years of experience.
- Simulation Tools: Familiarity with EMT platforms (PSCAD, RTDS, Opal-RT).
- Digital Twins: Experience with OpenFMB, Modelica, or graph-based modeling.
- Grid Standards: Knowledge of IEEE 2030.5, IEC 61850, or similar utility protocols.
WHY JOIN US
- Mission: Work at the forefront of the energy transition, solving the most critical challenges of the modern grid.
- Impact: Influence the architecture of decentralized, autonomous energy systems.
- Environment: Enjoy a startup-style, agile culture backed by the global reach and resources of GE Vernova.

Which companies in Florida sponsor visas for senior software developers?
Several large Florida employers have active H-1B visa sponsorship histories for senior software developer roles. These include Chewy (Dania Beach), Citrix (Fort Lauderdale), Tech Data, Lockheed Martin (Orlando), and a range of fintech companies concentrated in Miami's Brickell and Wynwood areas. Large healthcare technology firms such as AdventHealth and HCA Healthcare also sponsor senior engineering talent regularly.
Which visa types are most common for senior software developer roles in Florida?
The H-1B is the most common visa for senior software developers in Florida, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field. Some employers also use the L-1A or L-1B for internal transfers, and candidates with extraordinary ability may qualify for the O-1A. TN visa status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in eligible software roles.
How to find senior software developer visa sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate filters senior software developer roles specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse Florida-based openings without sifting through positions that don't offer sponsorship. The platform focuses on employers with verified sponsorship histories, which is particularly useful in Florida where sponsorship activity is concentrated in Miami, Tampa, and Orlando rather than spread evenly across the state.
Which cities in Florida have the most senior software developer sponsorship jobs?
Miami leads for senior software developer sponsorship activity, driven by a dense fintech, healthtech, and startup ecosystem. Tampa follows closely with enterprise software and cybersecurity employers. Orlando has strong sponsorship presence tied to defense contractors, simulation technology firms, and gaming companies. Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville also have active hiring, particularly among enterprise IT and logistics technology employers.
Are there any Florida-specific considerations for senior software developer visa sponsorship?
Florida has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage calculations employers use for Labor Condition Applications. Sponsors must still meet DOL prevailing wage requirements for the specific metro area, and wages differ noticeably between Miami and smaller Florida metros. Florida's university system, including the University of Florida and University of Central Florida, supplies a significant pipeline of international students on OPT who often seek H-1B sponsorship at the senior level after a few years in the workforce.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software developer jobs in Florida?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
