Which legal companies sponsor Green Card visas in Illinois?
Chicago's large law firms are the most active sponsors, including Sidley Austin, Kirkland & Ellis, Mayer Brown, Winston & Strawn, and Jenner & Block. Corporate legal departments at companies like Boeing, Hyatt, and Morningstar also sponsor Green Cards for in-house counsel. Sponsorship is more common at firms with international practices and companies with established immigration compliance programs.
Which cities in Illinois have the most legal Green Card sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of legal Green Card sponsorship opportunities in Illinois, driven by its concentration of AmLaw 100 firms, multinational corporate headquarters, and financial institutions. Suburban Cook County cities like Schaumburg and Oak Brook have some in-house legal roles at large regional employers, but downtown Chicago remains the primary market for sponsored legal positions in the state.
What types of legal roles typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship in Illinois?
Associates and senior associates at large law firms are the most commonly sponsored, particularly in transactional, intellectual property, and litigation practices. In-house roles including corporate counsel, compliance attorneys, and regulatory counsel at Illinois-based corporations also see consistent sponsorship. Paralegals and legal operations professionals are sponsored less frequently, though it does occur at larger firms and corporations with established immigration programs.
How do I find legal Green Card sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you filter legal jobs in Illinois by Green Card sponsorship so you're only seeing employers who have historically supported the process. This saves significant time compared to researching sponsorship willingness firm by firm. Illinois legal hiring is concentrated in Chicago, so filtering by city alongside visa type on Migrate Mate will surface the most relevant opportunities.
Are there any state-specific or industry-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in legal roles in Illinois?
Illinois requires attorneys to be licensed through the Illinois State Bar, and some sponsorship pathways, particularly EB-2 and EB-3 through PERM, may require demonstrating that no qualified U.S. worker is available for the specific role. Chicago's competitive legal market means PERM recruitment steps are scrutinized carefully. Foreign-trained attorneys may also need to address bar admission requirements alongside their sponsorship timeline, which can affect how employers structure the process.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card legal jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
