Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and compassionate Oncology Pharmacy Technician to support oncology pharmacy operations in a fast-paced cancer care environment. The Oncology Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in preparing, dispensing, and managing chemotherapy, biotherapy, and supportive care medications while ensuring compliance with USP <797>, USP <800>, and all applicable state and federal regulations. The ideal candidate has experience in sterile compounding, oncology medication preparation, and a strong commitment to patient safety and quality care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist pharmacists in the preparation and dispensing of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive oncology medications.
- Perform sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous medications in accordance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards.
- Accurately calculate, label, package, and document medication preparations.
- Maintain inventory of oncology medications, chemotherapy agents, and pharmacy supplies.
- Receive, stock, and rotate medications while monitoring expiration dates.
- Utilize pharmacy information systems and electronic medical records (EMR) for medication processing and documentation.
- Prepare medication delivery and ensure timely distribution to infusion centers and clinical units.
- Participate in medication reconciliation and quality assurance activities as directed.
- Maintain cleanroom and compounding areas according to organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with prior authorization documentation and specialty medication coordination when required.
- Adhere to all safety procedures related to handling hazardous medications and cytotoxic agents.
- Support pharmacists and healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient care.
Required Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Pharmacy Technician training program preferred.
Licensure & Certification
- Active Illinois Pharmacy Technician Registration required.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through PTCB or ExCPT preferred.
- Hazardous Drug Handling and Sterile Compounding certification preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 1-2 years of pharmacy technician experience required.
- At least 1 year of sterile compounding experience preferred.
- Oncology pharmacy experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of oncology medications and chemotherapy protocols.
