ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Electrical Maintenance Engineer role focuses on ensuring the consistent performance and reliability of systems and equipment within the organization. This role involves analyzing data to identify potential failures, implementing reliability‑centered maintenance strategies, and developing improvement plans to enhance operational uptime. In this position, you collaborate with cross‑functional teams to establish metrics, conduct root cause analysis, and integrate best practices that promote long‑term reliability and efficiency. As an Electrical Maintenance Engineer, you provide electrical and instrumentation technology support for chemical manufacturing areas, delivering well‑documented, technically sound, and cost‑effective solutions based on recognized engineering principles and sound judgment.
The primary responsibilities of this role, Electrical Maintenance Engineer, are to:
- Understand, follow, and contribute to the upkeep of Bayer electrical norms, practices, standards, guidelines, and procedures while staying current with industry standards, technology, and improved safety methods;
- Support improvement projects (for example safety, yield, capacity, quality, reliability, and cost improvement), including evaluating alternatives and performing cost‑benefit analyses as needed;
- Specify instruments (such as flow, pressure, and temperature), control devices, motors, and other electrical components for plant applications;
- Review and evaluate vendor information for instrumentation and electrical components and determine suitability for specific project and maintenance applications;
- Prepare maintenance plans to restore equipment to operating condition in a minimum amount of time, balancing repair cost with minimizing future failures, and contribute to routine electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities in the plant;
- Assist other area engineers (production, process, electrical, project) and technicians regarding instrumentation and electrical performance, providing technical guidance as needed;
- Create and modify documentation related to process operation, safety, and applicable environmental regulations, including electrical drawings and engineering flow diagrams/P&ID diagrams;
- Engage in ongoing development of self and area personnel through peer coaching and constructive feedback, while complying with site safety rules and actively improving safety through coaching or engineered solutions;
- Support Site and Area Production System improvements, including OnePSS, and perform basic electrical maintenance responsibilities such as instrumentation evaluation, maintenance planning, and thorough documentation as an individual contributor under guidance from more experienced engineers and leadership.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline;
- 0–2 years of engineering experience, preferably in an industrial or chemical manufacturing environment;
- Fundamental knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems and their application in process operations;
- Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor while accepting significant direction and oversight from experienced engineers and leadership;
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to support root cause analysis and reliability‑focused decisions;
- Solid written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create and maintain technical documentation and drawings;
- Demonstrated commitment to working safely and supporting a strong safety culture.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with electrical drawings and P&ID/engineering flow diagrams in an industrial setting;
- Exposure to reliability‑centered maintenance concepts, production systems, or continuous improvement methodologies (for example OnePSS or similar);
- Familiarity with specifying and troubleshooting industrial instrumentation and control devices in chemical or related process industries;
- Familiarity with PLC and control systems.
COMPENSATION
Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $63,040.00 - $94,560.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Which companies sponsor visas for maintenance engineers in Iowa?
Iowa's largest manufacturing employers are among the most active visa sponsors for maintenance engineers. John Deere, with major facilities in Waterloo and the Quad Cities, regularly hires engineers with specialized skills. Food manufacturers including Quaker Oats, Kraft Heinz, and Tyson Foods operate large plants requiring maintenance expertise. Rockwell Collins and other advanced manufacturing firms in Cedar Rapids also have documented H-1B visa sponsorship histories through Department of Labor disclosure data.
Which visa types are most common for maintenance engineer roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for maintenance engineers in Iowa, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN visa status under the engineer category, which has no lottery. Engineers with extraordinary ability may explore the O-1A. Each category has distinct requirements tied to the specific job duties and employer.
Which cities in Iowa have the most maintenance engineer sponsorship jobs?
Cedar Rapids and Des Moines lead Iowa for maintenance engineer sponsorship activity, driven by dense concentrations of food processing, manufacturing, and logistics facilities. Waterloo and Dubuque are strong secondary markets, anchored by John Deere operations and industrial equipment manufacturers. The Quad Cities metro, straddling Iowa and Illinois, also generates consistent demand for maintenance engineers across automotive supply chain and agricultural equipment sectors.
How to find maintenance engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate filters visa sponsorship jobs specifically for maintenance engineer roles in Iowa, making it straightforward to identify employers actively hiring international candidates. Rather than sorting through unfiltered postings, you can browse maintenance engineer positions already screened for sponsorship history. Iowa's manufacturing concentration means new listings appear regularly, particularly from food production and heavy equipment sectors that maintain ongoing technical hiring needs.
Are there any Iowa-specific considerations for maintenance engineers seeking visa sponsorship?
Iowa's manufacturing economy means many maintenance engineer roles are tied to production schedules where facilities prefer candidates who can start without long processing delays. Iowa State University and the University of Iowa produce engineering graduates who create a competitive local pipeline, so international candidates with specialized experience in areas like high-speed packaging systems, CNC equipment, or agricultural machinery tend to stand out. Prevailing wage determinations for Iowa are generally lower than coastal metros, which can simplify the Labor Condition Application process for employers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored maintenance engineer jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
