Which companies sponsor visas for structural project engineers in Maryland?
Engineering and infrastructure firms with active Maryland offices are the most consistent sponsors for structural project engineers. Companies such as Jacobs, AECOM, WSP, KCI Technologies, and Rummel, Klepper and Kahl (RK&K) have histories of hiring internationally for structural roles. Defense-adjacent engineering contractors operating near the I-270 corridor and around federal installations also sponsor, particularly for engineers with transportation or bridge project experience.
Which visa types are most common for structural project engineer roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most frequently used visa for structural project engineers in Maryland, as the role generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Engineers from Canada or Mexico may qualify for TN status under the NAFTA-successor USMCA, which does not require a lottery. O-1 visas are an option for engineers with exceptional credentials, though these are far less common in this field.
Which cities in Maryland have the most structural project engineer sponsorship jobs?
Baltimore is the primary hub, with a concentration of structural roles tied to port infrastructure, transit projects, and commercial development. The Washington suburbs, particularly Rockville, Bethesda, and Greenbelt, also have strong demand driven by proximity to federal agencies and their contractors. Annapolis and the I-95 corridor see activity related to highway and bridge projects managed by the Maryland State Highway Administration and large engineering primes.
How to find structural project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it easier to identify Maryland employers actively open to sponsoring structural project engineers. Rather than sifting through general job postings, you can search by role and state to surface verified sponsorship opportunities. This is especially useful for structural engineers on OPT or those planning an H-1B petition, where timing and employer eligibility both matter.
Are there state-specific factors that affect visa sponsorship for structural project engineers in Maryland?
Maryland's proximity to federal agencies means many engineering contracts fall under government prime or subcontract arrangements, where security clearance requirements can limit international hiring. Engineers without U.S. work authorization history may be excluded from clearance-dependent roles. However, Maryland also has a strong private sector and state transportation pipeline that does not carry those restrictions. The University of Maryland produces a steady stream of structural engineering graduates, and some firms recruit internationally for mid-level and senior project engineer positions where experience is the differentiator.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural project engineer jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
