Which companies sponsor visas for structural project engineers in Minnesota?
Engineering and construction firms with established immigration programs are the most active sponsors. In Minnesota, companies like Mortenson Construction, AECOM, Burns & McDonnell, Kimley-Horn, and HDR Engineering have filed Labor Condition Applications for structural engineering roles. Large utilities and industrial contractors working on infrastructure projects in the Twin Cities metro also regularly sponsor H-1B petitions for qualified structural project engineers.
Which visa types are most common for structural project engineer roles in Minnesota?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for structural project engineers in Minnesota, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Canadian and Mexican engineers may qualify for the TN visa under the NAFTA/USMCA engineer category. Engineers with an approved I-140 petition may also work on H-1B extensions under AC21 portability provisions.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most structural project engineer sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and St. Paul together account for the large majority of structural project engineer openings in Minnesota. The metro's ongoing infrastructure investment, including light rail expansion, highway reconstruction, and commercial development, drives consistent demand. Rochester sees some activity tied to large institutional construction, including Mayo Clinic expansion projects. Smaller markets like Duluth and St. Cloud have occasional openings but significantly fewer sponsorship opportunities.
How to find structural project engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate aggregates visa sponsorship jobs specifically for international engineers, making it straightforward to filter for structural project engineer roles in Minnesota. Because sponsorship eligibility is surfaced directly, you avoid applying to positions where employers won't support an H-1B or other work visa. Searching Migrate Mate by role and state lets you focus on Minnesota firms that have a documented history of sponsoring engineering candidates.
Are there any state-specific considerations for structural project engineers seeking sponsorship in Minnesota?
Minnesota requires a Professional Engineer license for engineers who stamp drawings or take responsible charge of projects. International engineers working toward licensure typically start in staff or project engineer roles under a licensed PE, which still qualify as specialty occupations for H-1B purposes. The University of Minnesota and Minnesota State system produce strong local engineering talent, so sponsored candidates generally need to demonstrate specialized experience, particularly in bridge, heavy civil, or complex structural systems, to stand out.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural project engineer jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
