Which companies sponsor visas for backend engineers in Massachusetts?
Large tech and biotech employers in Massachusetts with consistent backend engineering sponsorship records include HubSpot, Wayfair, Fidelity Investments, Biogen, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Mid-size fintech and healthtech startups in the Boston and Cambridge areas also sponsor regularly, particularly for roles requiring expertise in Python, Java, Go, or distributed systems. Sponsorship patterns vary by company size and hiring volume.
Which visa types are most common for backend engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for backend engineers in Massachusetts, as software development roles requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field generally qualify as specialty occupations. Candidates already in the U.S. on F-1 OPT or STEM OPT extension can often begin working while H-1B visa petitions are pending. The O-1A is an alternative for engineers with demonstrated exceptional achievement.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most backend engineer sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge account for the majority of backend engineer sponsorship roles in Massachusetts, with Cambridge's Kendall Square hosting a high concentration of biotech and AI companies. The Route 128 corridor, including Waltham and Burlington, is a secondary hub where established tech and life sciences employers maintain large engineering teams. Worcester has a smaller but growing tech presence tied to its university ecosystem.
How to find backend engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find backend engineer roles in Massachusetts without sorting through companies that don't sponsor. You can search by location and role to surface positions at Boston-area biotech, fintech, and enterprise software employers. This saves significant time compared to reviewing unfiltered postings where sponsorship status is often unclear.
Are there state-specific factors backend engineers should know about the Massachusetts job market?
Massachusetts has one of the highest concentrations of H-1B petitions filed per capita in the U.S., driven by its biotech and university research sectors. Employers filing Labor Condition Applications must pay the prevailing wage for the specific metropolitan statistical area, which in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton area reflects a competitive regional benchmark. The strong university pipeline from MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, and Boston University means sponsoring employers are familiar with international hiring processes.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored backend engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
