Established tech and financial services employers in Massachusetts with active principal software engineer hiring include HubSpot, Wayfair, Fidelity Investments, Putnam Investments, and Toast. Biotech-adjacent software roles at companies like Biogen and Moderna have also generated sponsorship filings. Large consulting firms and cloud infrastructure teams based in the Boston metro area regularly appear in Department of Labor LCA disclosure data for senior engineering positions.
Which visa types are most common for principal software engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for principal software engineers in Massachusetts, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary ability or sustained recognition may pursue the O-1A. Australian citizens working at Massachusetts employers can explore the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and allows two-year renewable status.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most principal software engineer sponsorship jobs?

How to find principal software engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for roles that offer visa sponsorship, including principal software engineer positions across Massachusetts. Rather than sorting through unfiltered postings, you can browse verified sponsoring employers by state and role level. Migrate Mate is built for international candidates, so the listings are screened for sponsorship eligibility, which saves significant time when targeting senior engineering roles in a competitive market like Boston.
Are there state-specific considerations for principal software engineers pursuing sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts employers filing H-1B Labor Condition Applications for principal software engineers must attest to paying the prevailing wage for the Boston-Cambridge-Nashua metropolitan area, which is among the higher wage tiers nationally for senior software engineering roles. The state's deep university pipeline from MIT, Harvard, and Northeastern means many sponsoring employers are already familiar with OPT-to-H-1B transitions, which can simplify initial conversations with recruiters.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored principal software engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
