Which companies sponsor visas for software systems engineers in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts has a strong mix of defense and tech employers that sponsor visas for software systems engineers. Raytheon Technologies, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, MathWorks, and Draper are prominent sponsors in the defense and engineering space. On the commercial tech side, HubSpot, Wayfair, Rapid7, and athenahealth have consistent H-1B visa sponsorship histories. Large employers like Amazon and Google also have significant Massachusetts offices with active engineering hiring.
Which visa types are most common for software systems engineer roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B is the most common visa for software systems engineers in Massachusetts, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. Some employers also use the L-1B for intracompany transfers with specialized knowledge. Candidates already in the U.S. on F-1 OPT, including STEM OPT extensions, are frequently hired before transitioning to H-1B sponsorship.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most software systems engineer sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge account for the largest share of software systems engineer sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts, driven by the concentration of tech companies, biotech firms, and university-affiliated research institutions. Waltham and Burlington along Route 128 are also significant hubs, particularly for defense contractors and established software companies. Lowell and Worcester have smaller but growing tech presences, often anchored by regional campuses of larger employers.
How to find software systems engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, and lets you filter software systems engineer jobs by state to see Massachusetts-specific openings from employers with verified sponsorship histories. Because not all job postings explicitly mention visa sponsorship, using a platform focused on sponsorship-confirmed roles saves significant time. Migrate Mate also provides context on employer sponsorship patterns, which is particularly useful when targeting Massachusetts's mix of defense, enterprise software, and startup employers.
Are there any Massachusetts-specific factors that affect software systems engineer sponsorship hiring?
Massachusetts employers must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the specific work location, and wages in Greater Boston are benchmarked against one of the higher-cost metropolitan areas in the country, which affects how employers structure H-1B filings. The state also has a deep university pipeline, with MIT, Boston University, Northeastern, and UMass Amherst producing engineering graduates who are already in the U.S. on F-1 status, making the local talent pool highly competitive for sponsorship roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software systems engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
