This role is responsible for managing all aspects of tenant fit-out construction, including coordination of trades, sequencing of work, quality control, and delivery of mission-critical infrastructure. The ideal candidate has strong construction management experience in data centers, with a solid understanding of white space infrastructure such as containment systems, overhead conveyance (including ladder racks and cable tray systems), structural support frameworks, and cooling components (HVAC). Familiarity with structured cabling systems (low voltage and fiber) is a plus.
This is a full-time salaried position offering competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, paid time off, paid training, and performance-based bonuses. This position is based in the Detroit metro area and will work onsite for local data center projects. Approximately 50% travel outside of the Detroit area should be expected at times.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead on-site construction management for data center white space fit-out projects
- Oversee installation of:
- Structural hot aisle / cold aisle containment systems
- Overhead cable tray systems and ladder rack conveyance
- Structural support systems for cabinets, racks, cable trays, and electrical power distribution infrastructure
- Cooling infrastructure, including HVAC units
- Power distribution from PDU down to cabinet level
- Manage trade contractors and ensure proper sequencing of work (e.g., structural supports → overhead conveyance → electrical distribution → cabling → containment) to maintain schedule and avoid conflicts
- Coordinate with general contractors, subcontractors, and client stakeholders
- Enforce quality control (QC) processes to ensure installations meet design specifications, load requirements, and industry standards
- Monitor project schedule, budget, and progress; proactively identify and resolve risks/issues
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and site protocols
- Review construction drawings, submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings related to supports and overhead systems
- Verify proper installation tolerances, anchoring, and support systems for overhead infrastructure
- Support commissioning and handover processes
Required Qualifications
- 5-10+ years of construction management experience, preferably in mission-critical or data center environments
- Proven experience managing white space fit-out / tenant improvement projects in colocation or hyperscale data centers
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple subcontractors and deliver projects on schedule
- Strong knowledge of QA/QC processes, including inspection of support systems and overhead installations
- Project Management skills including scheduling and budgeting
- Candidate must have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Strong stakeholder and client communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with low voltage cabling (LVC) and/or fiber optic infrastructure within data centers
- Procore experience is strongly preferred
- RCDD-level knowledge or experience with structured cabling design standards (e.g., setting or enforcing standards)
- Experience in commissioning or turnover of data center white space environments
To support a fair, consistent, and high-quality hiring experience, some interviews may be recorded. These recordings help our team focus fully on the conversation at hand, rather than note-taking, and allow us to better evaluate and improve our recruitment process. Recordings are used solely for internal purposes such as training, quality assurance, and process improvement. Candidates will be informed in advance and asked to provide consent before any recording takes place.

Which companies sponsor visas for construction managers in Michigan?
Michigan's largest general contractors and construction management firms are the most active sponsors. Barton Malow, Walbridge, and Turner Construction have filed H-1B visa Labor Condition Applications for construction-related roles in the state. Large civil and infrastructure contractors working on MDOT and automotive campus projects also sponsor periodically. Sponsorship is more common at firms with dedicated HR and legal departments than at smaller regional contractors.
Which visa types are most common for construction manager roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for construction managers in Michigan, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field. The EB-3 employment-based green card is also relevant for longer-term sponsorship. TN visa status applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering or management roles under USMCA.
Which cities in Michigan have the most construction manager sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its surrounding metro area account for the majority of construction manager sponsorship activity in Michigan, driven by automotive plant expansions, mixed-use redevelopment, and infrastructure investment. Grand Rapids has a growing commercial construction market with several mid-size firms active in sponsorship. Ann Arbor sees demand tied to university and life sciences campus projects, while Lansing has activity connected to state and municipal construction programs.
How to find construction manager visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter by construction manager roles in Michigan to see employers who have a documented history of sponsoring foreign nationals. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact, which is the point where many international applicants face rejection.
Are there state-specific considerations for construction manager visa sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan's Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity sets prevailing wage benchmarks that employers must meet when filing H-1B Labor Condition Applications for construction manager roles. Candidates with degrees from Michigan-based programs at Michigan State University or University of Michigan may have a stronger hiring pipeline with in-state contractors. Project-based hiring is common in construction, so sponsorship timelines can be tied to contract awards rather than standard annual recruiting cycles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored construction manager jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
