Which companies sponsor visas for senior software developers in Michigan?
Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis are among the most active H-1B visa sponsors for senior software developers in Michigan, particularly for roles in vehicle software, embedded systems, and autonomous driving. Rocket Companies, Consumers Energy, and Flagstar Bank also file regularly. Michigan's large automotive suppliers, including Aptiv and BorgWarner, sponsor senior developer roles tied to connected vehicle platforms.
Which visa types are most common for senior software developer roles in Michigan?
The H-1B is the most common visa for senior software developers in Michigan. The role generally qualifies as a specialty occupation because it requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates with extraordinary ability or a national interest waiver may also pursue O-1 visa or EB-2 NIW pathways, though those require substantially stronger documentation.
Which cities in Michigan have the most senior software developer sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its immediate suburbs, particularly Dearborn, Troy, and Southfield, account for the majority of senior software developer sponsorship activity in Michigan due to automotive and financial services headquarters. Ann Arbor is the second-largest hub, driven by the University of Michigan's research ecosystem and a cluster of health tech and mobility startups. Grand Rapids has a smaller but growing software employer base.
How to find senior software developer visa sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate lets you filter senior software developer jobs in Michigan specifically by visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through listings that won't support international candidates. Michigan employers in automotive technology and financial services post regularly, and the platform surfaces roles from companies with verified H-1B filing histories. Filtering by Michigan narrows results to Detroit-area and Ann Arbor employers where sponsorship activity is concentrated.
Are there state-specific considerations for senior software developers seeking sponsorship in Michigan?
Michigan's prevailing wage requirements for H-1B positions are set by the Department of Labor and reflect local market rates, which differ notably between Detroit metro and Ann Arbor compared to smaller markets. The state's heavy concentration of automotive employers means many senior software developer roles involve safety-critical or embedded systems work, and employers in those sectors tend to have established immigration programs with in-house or retained counsel already familiar with the process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored senior software developer jobs in Michigan?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
