The State of New Hampshire, Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation, Bureau of Trails, has a full-time vacancy for our Supervisor of Construction Equipment Operators.

Summary:

Supervises a dedicated crew engaged in year-round construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of gravel roads, OHRV trails, snowmobile trails, and various other projects within the Great North Woods recreation area. Ensures the proper upkeep of OHRV, snowmobile, and non-motorized trails and roads managed by the Bureau of Trails across the region. Oversees the management and maintenance of the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters (CLH) 260-mile road and trail system in Pittsburg, serving as the Bureau of Trails’ representative for CLH operations and initiatives.

Responsibilities:

DETAILED TASKS (AGENCY/POSITION-SPECIFIC):

• Participates actively in meetings and collaborations with private landowners, local municipalities, commissions, and snowmobile and OHRV clubs to support community engagement and project coordination.

• Operates hydraulic snow grooming equipment and a variety of attachments independently, including large commercial snow groomers and drag units across diverse terrains such as remote mountainous trails. Demonstrates flexibility by performing duties during both day and night shifts as needed, consistently ensuring optimal trail conditions and safety standards.

• Proficiently operates a comprehensive range of heavy construction machinery, including excavators, backhoes, graders, skid steers, brush mowers, and other specialized equipment to facilitate efficient, safe, and high-quality project execution in various environments.

• Performs routine mechanical maintenance on heavy equipment and executes emergency field repairs to ensure safe and efficient removal from trails. Receives and distributes construction materials to designated job sites for trail and road repair work.

• Operates independently during winter grooming operations, managing tasks without assistance and maintaining or operating mechanical equipment using standard tools, often without access to specialized equipment.

• Supervises a team of workers engaged in the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of gravel roads and trails, as well as various infrastructure projects such as bridge and culvert replacements. Ensures all work meets high standards of quality and safety and is completed within established timelines. Provides oversight and guidance to skilled trade workers, equipment operators, and outside contractors, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes efficiency and excellence in project execution.

• Performs construction activities including stump, rock, and ledge removal; installation of steel I-beams for bridges; placement of concrete bridge abutments, walls, culverts, and other structural elements; stone setting; and excavation of soil and fill material. The role involves supervising and executing carpentry tasks, welding, and steel cutting, utilizing a variety of power tools and equipment to ensure precision and safety throughout the project.

• Recommends repairs, determines work procedures, and supervises personnel in the maintenance of tools and equipment. Prepares weekly, monthly, and seasonal reports of work performed in the field.

• Provides accurate interpretation of plans, blueprints, and sketches for proposed structures as required. Ensures compliance by understanding, implementing, and enforcing all relevant safety protocols, environmental standards, and industry regulations.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 3 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience may include work in heavy equipment operation, construction trades, forestry, trail maintenance, or related fields.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license

Other Requirements: Must obtain valid Commercial Driver’s License i.e. CDL with appropriate endorsements within the first year of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Proficiency in operating equipment such as ATVs, snow grooming machinery, or heavy machinery.

• Prior supervisory experience managing teams of skilled workers, equipment operators, and contractors.

• Strong communication and team coordination skills.

• Comprehensive understanding of safety protocols, environmental standards, and industry regulations relevant to heavy equipment operation and construction.
