The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of Emergency Services & Communications, has a full-time vacancy for Field Technician (Communications Technician II), SOC Title 49-2020 TELECOMMS REPAIRERS-6, which has a 40 hour work week and is considered non-exempt.
SUMMARY
Prepares, installs and maintains the statewide communications network to include land mobile radio (LMR) apparatus, digital microwave, telephony, video, IP networks, and related systems.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS
Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 6 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in telecommunications or electrical engineering, electronics, electronic service technology, or in support and maintenance of wired and wireless communications, infrastructure equipment and software.
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license.

Must pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check in order to ensure suitability for exposure to confidential information.

Must be able to respond to emergency call-out if available, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Must be physically able to climb and perform installation, repairs and maintenance of the antenna and warning light systems that exist on communications structures ranging in height up to 500 feet.

Must be able to obtain a certificate of good health from a NH licensed physician.
Trainee Option: Candidates with an equivalent combination of 5+ years of relevant education and experience after completion of high school may be considered and hired in ‘trainee status’ for this position.

Possession of FCC general class license preferred.

Must satisfactorily complete training provided by the Division to obtain climbing safety certifications within 6 months, and maintain certifications throughout employment.

Must perform a minimum number of hours of tower work over a given time period as determined by the Division Director.
Responsibilities
Prepares, installs, programs and maintains communications systems such as LMR, microwave and telephony equipment and including transmitters, receivers, portable radios, mobile radios, coaxial cables, waveguides, dispatch consoles, audio recorders, video, IP network equipment and associated hardware in both fixed and mobile locations.
Installs, programs and maintains vehicle warning equipment to include lights, sirens, and associated vehicle mounted devices for the Department of Safety and other agencies as needed.
Troubleshoots, identifies, and resolves problems with equipment; maintains logs and files reports relating to system issues and repairs made.
Maintains and evaluates DC battery systems, UPS systems, generators and associated hardware to determine quality and ensure proper functionality.
Participates, as assigned, in the coordination of community events statewide to plan and prepare communication systems and equipment to ensure public safety. Performs onsite set up, maintenance and troubleshooting during event.
Oversees and exercises supervision over contractors to ensure functional requirements specified in the contract are being met.
Assists in providing end user training and technical support of radio equipment to ensure proper usage and connectivity.
Frequently travels to remote mountaintop sites by foot, OHRV, snowmobile, or four-wheel drive vehicle.
Frequently climbs communications tower structures of up to 500’ to install, evaluate, and maintain antenna, video and warning light systems including remote site buildings and grounds maintenance.
