Search Legal Associate Jobs in New YorkLegal Associate Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies sponsor visas for legal associates in New York?
Large international and AmLaw 100 firms are the most consistent sponsors for legal associates in New York. Firms like Cravath, Davis Polk, Latham and Watkins, and Sullivan and Cromwell have established immigration sponsorship programs and regularly hire internationally trained attorneys. In-house legal departments at major financial institutions and multinational corporations headquartered in New York also sponsor legal associates, particularly for corporate and compliance roles.
Which visa types are most common for legal associate roles in New York?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for legal associates in New York, as attorney positions at law firms and corporations typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a law degree. Lawyers licensed in foreign jurisdictions who hold LL.M. degrees from U.S. law schools frequently pursue H-1B sponsorship after completing OPT. The O-1A is an alternative for associates who have demonstrated exceptional ability, though it requires substantial supporting documentation.
Which cities in New York have the most legal associate sponsorship jobs?
Manhattan accounts for the overwhelming majority of legal associate sponsorship opportunities in New York State. Midtown and Lower Manhattan host the densest concentration of Am Law 100 firms and major corporate legal departments. Albany has some government-adjacent legal roles, and Buffalo has regional firm presence, but neither compares to Manhattan's volume. International candidates targeting New York sponsorship should focus their search primarily on New York City.
How to find legal associate visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters legal associate roles in New York by visa sponsorship willingness, saving you from manually screening hundreds of postings. Beyond the job board, focus on firms with documented H-1B filing histories through DOL disclosure data, and target LL.M. programs with strong New York firm placement records, as those pipelines frequently feed directly into sponsored associate roles at large firms.
Are there state-specific considerations for legal associates seeking visa sponsorship in New York?
Foreign-trained lawyers in New York must pass the New York Bar Exam, and LL.M. graduates from ABA-accredited programs are eligible to sit for it under New York's rules, which are more permissive than most other states. Firms sponsoring international associates for H-1B status will typically require bar admission or active candidacy. New York's large LL.M. pipeline through schools like NYU, Columbia, and Fordham means competition for sponsored associate roles is significant.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored legal associate jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
