Which companies sponsor visas for psychologists in New York?
Large health systems are the most consistent sponsors for psychologist roles in New York. NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, Mount Sinai Health System, and NewYork-Presbyterian have all filed H-1B petitions for psychology positions. The VA New York Harbor and VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System also sponsor through federal hiring pipelines. University-affiliated medical centers, including those connected to Columbia, NYU, and SUNY campuses, are similarly active sponsors.
Which visa types are most common for psychologist roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most commonly used visa for licensed psychologist roles in New York, as psychology qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a doctoral degree. Postdoctoral fellows and researchers may enter under J-1 exchange visitor status through university-sponsored programs. Psychologists with exceptional research records may also qualify for the O-1A. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals with qualifying psychology credentials under the USMCA.
How to find psychologist visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship willingness and state, making it practical for international psychologists targeting New York employers. Search for psychologist roles on Migrate Mate and filter to New York to surface positions at health systems, VA facilities, and university medical centers that have documented sponsorship histories. This saves significant time compared to manually screening job postings that rarely disclose sponsorship upfront.
Which cities in New York have the most psychologist sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the majority of psychologist sponsorship activity in the state, concentrated in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx through large hospital networks and community mental health centers. Buffalo has notable demand through Erie County Medical Center and University at Buffalo-affiliated programs. Albany sees hiring through state government health agencies and Capital Region Medical Center. Rochester's medical corridor, anchored by the University of Rochester Medical Center, also generates consistent openings.
Are there state-specific considerations for psychologist visa sponsorship in New York?
New York requires psychologists to hold a license from the State Education Department before practicing independently, which typically requires completing supervised postdoctoral hours after your doctorate. International applicants should verify that their foreign doctoral program meets New York's licensure standards before relying on sponsorship timelines. Employers sponsoring H-1B petitions for psychologists must pay at least the prevailing wage for the role and location as determined by Department of Labor wage data, which varies across New York City, Long Island, and upstate regions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored psychologist jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
