JOB PURPOSE
The 1st Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising and assisting daily print production operations during the day shift, typically Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This position provides leadership, training, and direction to first-shift production personnel while ensuring efficient workflows, adherence to production schedules, and consistent product quality. This is a working position, and candidate is expected to operate machinery when necessary.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1st Shift Supervisor
- Daily Supervision: Assists Production Manager with managing daily production schedules to maximize equipment utilization across press runs. Facilitate smooth shift handoffs, communicating work-in-progress (WIP) status, downtime logs, and priority jobs.
- Printing: Step in & operate equipment during high-volume periods, operator absences, or specialized complex runs.
- Production Planning/Scheduling: Coordinate job staging, plates, dies, inks, and substrates to minimize press downtime between setups.
- Productivity: Monitor workflow and productivity and ensure accurate and timely entries within the ERP system.
- Quality Control: Assist in monitoring color calibration, press operations, quality control and waste reduction. Assists with random QC checks to ensure operators are keeping production within spec.
- Production Reporting: Hand-off production reports and shift notes to Production Manager and second-shift supervisor.
- Assist Inventory Management: Work closely with Supply Chain to assist with the management of inventory; raw materials, semi-finished goods, paper stock, and ink inventory.
- Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot equipment failures and coordinate routine maintenance, working closely with production and support teams to maintain quality standards, and ensure customer requirements are consistently met across DPS, RFID, flexographic printing, and converting operations.
- Facility Maintenance: Oversee daily Facility Maintenance needs (internal/external). Ability to secure a minimum of 3 quotes for larger projects that can’t be done in house.
DEVELOPMENT PLAN (PHASE IN)
- Daily Management: Managing and developing day-shift operators and technicians.
- Performance Management: Provide day-to-day guidance, +30-60-90-day Strategic Plan’s based on operational needs or Performance Improvement Plan’s (PIP) when needed.
Education
Preferred bachelor's degree in business management, operations management, supply chain, and/or work experience.
Experience
A minimum of 4-5 years of printing experience in a manufacturing facility or a related field, with proven experience in people management, development, quality control, inventory, planning and scheduling.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Proficiency in using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, planning and scheduling software.
- Previous experience in creation, training and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
- Possess and utilizes a strong sense of urgency to meet tight deadlines with efficiency.
SOFT SKILLS
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, time management, reporting metrics, and organizational skills.
- Moderate computer skills and software; Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent data analysis and critical thinking skills are a must.
- Ability to give and/or take detailed direction to effectively execute on deliverables.
- Ability to build rapport with all colleagues; executive, senior leadership and subordinates.
INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE
- Experience with various printing methods; Digital, Flexo, Converting.
- Lean Manufacturing principles.
- OSHA principles and required documentation.
- Previous experience working within a manufacturing ERP modular based system.
WORKING CONDITIONS/TRAVEL
This is an onsite production environment position that requires the ability to lift up to 50lbs. Travel <10%.
HOURS
1st Shift Supervisor position is a Full-time position requiring 40+ hours per week. Overtime may be requested on occasion to support production needs.
DIRECT REPORTS
The 1st Shift Supervisor will eventually be responsible for the direct supervision of the following departments; DPS, RFID, with some supervision of the Flexo, and Converting. Direct reporting will be transitioned slowly.
