We’re seeking an Advanced Data Scientist who blends strong statistical foundations with hands-on software engineering skills and can take ideas from research through experimentation, validation, and deployment. In this role, you’ll be a technical leader in applying a variety of GenAI techniques to real business problems, alongside more traditional AI/ML, with a particular emphasis on computer vision for drone imagery. You’ll help shape the team’s tooling and development patterns, partner deeply with business units to understand AI/ML needs, and mentor other data scientists to raise the bar for AI delivery across the company.
What You’ll Do:

- Apply strong statistical judgment to model selection, evaluation, and validation.
- Incorporate computer vision techniques where appropriate, including imagery-based use cases such as drone data.
Experimentation & Model Quality
- Design and run experiments to evaluate model performance and business impact.
- Define success metrics, validation approaches, and acceptance criteria for AI solutions.
- Perform error analysis, robustness checks, and performance tuning prior to production use.
Production Readiness & Tooling
- Package and deploy models using established pipelines and platforms.
- Apply best practices for versioning, reproducibility, and experiment tracking.
- Help guide and improve the tools, platforms, and development patterns used by data scientists across teams.
Business Partnership & Translation
- Work with business units to understand AI/ML needs and identify high-value use cases.
- Translate business problems into clear technical approaches and delivery plans.
- Communicate results, tradeoffs, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide technical guidance and review for other data scientists and partner teams.
- Mentor peers on modeling approaches, experimentation, and production delivery.
- Serve as a role model for high-quality, responsible, and scalable AI/ML work across the company.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience delivering end-to-end AI/ML solutions from experimentation through production.
- Strong foundation in statistics and experimental design, including model evaluation and success metrics.
- Hands-on experience building models across traditional ML and GenAI, with sound judgment on approach selection.
- Experience applying computer vision techniques and building scalable imagery-based ML pipelines.
- Solid software engineering practices, including reproducibility, version control, and reusable code.
- Practical MLOps experience with model packaging, deployment, tracking, and monitoring.
- Ability to translate business needs into technical direction and clearly communicate tradeoffs.
- Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, review, and influence.
- Strong Python skills for ML development; working knowledge of R preferred.

Which companies sponsor visas for data contributors in Ohio?
Ohio employers with documented H-1B sponsorship activity for data-related roles include Nationwide Insurance, Progressive Corporation, JPMorgan Chase's Columbus operations, Cleveland Clinic, and Ohio State University. Large healthcare systems and insurance carriers across the state regularly hire international candidates for data contributor positions, as these roles require specialized technical qualifications that support specialty occupation classification.
Which visa types are most common for data contributor roles in Ohio?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for data contributor roles in Ohio, as these positions typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as computer science, statistics, or information systems. F-1 graduates with OPT or STEM OPT authorization often fill data contributor roles initially, with employers later sponsoring H-1B petitions. O-1A visas are an option for candidates with demonstrated exceptional ability.
Which cities in Ohio have the most data contributor sponsorship jobs?
Columbus accounts for the largest share of data contributor sponsorship activity in Ohio, driven by its concentration of insurance companies, financial institutions, and a large university research ecosystem. Cleveland follows, with healthcare systems like Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals generating consistent demand. Cincinnati's corporate base, including financial services and consumer goods firms, also produces data contributor openings with sponsorship.
How to find data contributor visa sponsorship jobs in Ohio?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters data contributor roles in Ohio by visa sponsorship eligibility, saving significant time compared to unfiltered searches. You can browse current openings in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, and filter by visa type and employer. Migrate Mate also surfaces employers with a history of sponsoring data-focused roles, which is particularly useful when evaluating Ohio-based opportunities.
Are there state-specific considerations for data contributor roles in Ohio?
Ohio's prevailing wage requirements under Department of Labor LCA rules apply to all H-1B data contributor positions, with wage levels determined by the specific job duties and the metropolitan area, so Columbus and Cleveland may carry different wage benchmarks. Ohio's strong university pipeline, particularly from Ohio State and Case Western Reserve, means employers are accustomed to hiring internationally educated candidates, which can support smoother sponsorship processes for data contributor roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data contributor jobs in Ohio?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
