INTRODUCTION
As an organization, Google maintains a portfolio of research projects driven by fundamental research, new product innovation, product contribution and infrastructure goals, while providing individuals and teams the freedom to emphasize specific types of work. As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more.
As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.
EarthAI is a frontier initiative at Google Research to build the world’s most advanced planetary foundation models and bring it together with Gemini based reasoning to understand, plan, and act to help address some of the most critical challenges of our time. Our team develops models that interpret the world's physical dynamics—from global mobility and population shifts to environmental signals—transforming the entire planet into an interactive environment for understanding and reasoning.
We are looking for a Research Scientist to push the boundaries of multimodal generative AI and agentic systems at a massive scale.
Google Research is building the next generation of intelligent systems for all Google products. To achieve this, we’re working on projects that utilize the latest computer science techniques developed by skilled software developers and research scientists. Google Research teams collaborate closely with other teams across Google, maintaining the flexibility and versatility required to adapt new projects and foci that meet the demands of the world's fast-paced business needs.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and implement algorithms for Generative AI across massive, multimodal planet-scale datasets, including satellite streams, population understanding and global environmental signals.
- Lead the training and fine-tuning of Gemini models to achieve "planetary-aware" reasoning, enabling advanced task planning and multi-step execution in complex contexts.
- Establish new benchmarks and publish original research that pushes this field forward.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deploy these models into products that promise to have a transformative impact.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience in AI research and development, including in Generative AI.
- Experience in Python and machine learning frameworks (e.g., Jax, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
- One or more accepted scientific publication submissions for conferences, journals, or public repositories (such as CVPR, ICCV, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, etc.).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in large-scale training of multimodal foundation models.
- Experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) and their adaptation to complex reasoning and planning.
- Ability to lead high-ambiguity research projects from high-level concepts to outcomes.
- Ability to build and scale multi-agent systems.
COMPENSATION
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Which companies in Oklahoma sponsor visas for data scientists?
Energy companies including Devon Energy, ONEOK, and Williams Companies have sponsored H-1B workers in data-related roles. Major health systems such as INTEGRIS Health and Mercy, along with aerospace and defense contractors operating near Tulsa, also appear in federal LCA disclosure data. University-affiliated research centers and financial services firms in Oklahoma City round out the sponsoring employer base for data scientists.
Which visa types are most common for data scientist roles in Oklahoma?
The H-1B is the most common visa for data scientists in Oklahoma, as the role consistently qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Candidates already holding OPT or STEM OPT through Oklahoma universities can work while an H-1B petition is filed. Professionals with extraordinary ability may also explore the O-1A category.
Which cities in Oklahoma have the most data scientist sponsorship jobs?
Oklahoma City is the primary hub, supported by the energy sector, state government agencies, and a growing financial services presence. Tulsa is the second-largest market, driven by energy midstream companies, aerospace manufacturers, and the broader tech community that has expanded around the Tulsa Remote initiative. Norman, home to the University of Oklahoma, generates a smaller but steady pipeline of data science opportunities.
How to find data scientist visa sponsorship jobs in Oklahoma?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, so you can search data scientist roles in Oklahoma without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. The platform focuses on employers with an active sponsorship history, which is especially useful in Oklahoma where the sponsoring employer pool is more concentrated than in larger tech markets. Filtering by city lets you target Oklahoma City or Tulsa specifically.
Are there state-specific considerations for data scientists seeking sponsorship in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma's data science job market is heavily shaped by the energy industry, so candidates with domain knowledge in upstream or midstream oil and gas analytics tend to be more competitive. The University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University produce local graduates, meaning employers may face domestic competition for roles, which influences how readily they initiate sponsorship. Prevailing wage requirements still apply, and employers must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before submitting an H-1B petition.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data scientist jobs in Oklahoma?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
