Which companies sponsor visas for data scientists in Washington DC?
Consulting and defense firms are among the most active sponsors in the DC area. Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte, Leidos, SAIC, and Accenture Federal Services have a history of filing H-1B visa petitions for data scientist roles. Non-defense employers such as ICF, Gartner, and various fintech and health-data companies in the broader DC metro also sponsor regularly. Note that roles requiring security clearances are typically unavailable to visa holders.
Which visa types are most common for data scientist roles in Washington DC?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for data scientists in Washington DC, as the role meets the specialty occupation standard requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as statistics, computer science, or mathematics. Some candidates with advanced degrees pursue the EB-2 NIW pathway. Candidates from Australia may qualify for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is processed faster.
How to find data scientist visa sponsorship jobs in Washington DC?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify data scientist roles in Washington DC where employers are actively willing to sponsor. You can search by role and location to surface positions at consulting firms, federal contractors, and tech companies in the DC metro. This saves significant time compared to manually screening general job postings for sponsorship details.
Which cities in Washington DC have the most data scientist sponsorship jobs?
Washington DC itself is the primary hub, but the broader metro area extends into Northern Virginia cities such as Arlington, McLean, Tysons, and Reston, which host major consulting and technology employers. Bethesda and Rockville in Maryland are also significant, particularly for health data and biomedical analytics roles tied to NIH and adjacent private-sector organizations. Most sponsored positions are concentrated within commuting distance of the District.
Are there state-specific considerations for data scientists seeking visa sponsorship in Washington DC?
Washington DC's data science market is heavily influenced by federal contracting, which means many roles require security clearances that non-US citizens cannot hold, narrowing the pool of sponsorship-eligible positions. Employers subject to federal contracts must also comply with prevailing wage requirements through the Department of Labor's LCA process. University programs at Georgetown, George Washington University, and American University generate a pipeline of international graduates who compete for the available sponsored roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data scientist jobs in Washington DC?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
