Senior Data Scientist - Supply Chain Analytics
As a Senior Data Scientist on the Supply Chain Analytical Solutions team, you’ll take the lead on solving complex supply chain challenges that directly impact how products move from warehouses to customers. A strong candidate will have a proven track record of leveraging advanced data science and operations research techniques to improve operational performance, and producing solutions that deliver measurable business value and inform operational decisions.
This role is hybrid, which means you will be required to work some days on-site at the Best Buy location listed on this posting and some days virtually from home or another non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.
What you’ll do
- Lead the formulation and execution of complex, ambiguous analytics problems across supply chain domains, owning solutions end to end, from problem framing and methodology selection through deployment, monitoring, and measurement of business impact.
- Serve as a trusted analytics advisor to fulfillment, logistics, and operations partners, to translate business context into models that drive measurable business impact through improved decisions.
- Partner cross-functionally with supply chain, technology, data engineering, and product teams to ensure analytical solutions are production-ready, scalable, and adopted.
- Effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including technical teams, business stakeholders, and executive leadership, through both written and verbal channels.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to Data Scientists and Decision Scientists, raising analytical rigor, solution quality, and consistency across the team.
- Explore and apply emerging analytics methods and technologies to advance supply chain capabilities, while establishing and reinforcing best practices for documentation, reproducibility, validation, and analytical standards.
Basic qualifications

- 4+ years of relevant experience in research and/or a quantitative field, including 3+ years of applied or industry experience or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years hands-on experience using data analytics (e.g., SQL, Python, R), and machine learning and/or optimization tools (i.e., Python, R, Gurobi, Vertex AI).
- 2+ years of experience working with large, structured and unstructured datasets
- Ability to deliver solutions that drive measurable business outcomes
- Demonstrated track record of delivering analytics solutions that provide measurable business value and influence decisions.
- Familiarity with and hands-on application of more than one analytical or modeling paradigm, such as optimization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, simulation, or other operations research techniques, applied to real-world business problems.
Preferred qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in a quantitative discipline
- Experience in retail, supply chain, logistics or fulfillment

Which companies sponsor visas for data scientists in Minnesota?
UnitedHealth Group and its subsidiary Optum are among the most active sponsors for data scientists in Minnesota, given their scale in healthcare analytics. Target's data science division in Minneapolis, along with 3M, Mayo Clinic (primarily in Rochester), and financial services firms like U.S. Bancorp, have established track records of filing H-1B visa petitions for data science roles.
Which visa types are most common for data scientist roles in Minnesota?
The H-1B is the most common visa for data scientists in Minnesota, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Candidates with Indian or Chinese nationality who face long green card backlogs may also hold H-1B extensions beyond the standard six years. Australians may qualify for the E-3 visa, and Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under TN visa status in relevant technical categories.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most data scientist sponsorship jobs?
The Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area accounts for the vast majority of data scientist sponsorship activity in Minnesota, driven by its concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and major healthcare organizations. Rochester is a secondary market with meaningful demand, primarily from Mayo Clinic. Outside these two metros, data science sponsorship opportunities in Minnesota are relatively limited.
How to find data scientist visa sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically for visa sponsorship, so you can search data scientist roles in Minnesota without sorting through employers who won't sponsor. The platform covers openings across Minneapolis-Saint Paul and Rochester, including positions at healthcare analytics firms, retail tech teams, and medical device companies that have active H-1B filing histories in the state.
Are there any state-specific or role-specific considerations for data scientists seeking sponsorship in Minnesota?
Minnesota's data science hiring is heavily shaped by its healthcare sector, which means many roles require domain knowledge in clinical data, electronic health records, or insurance claims modeling. University of Minnesota graduates in data science and statistics represent a significant pipeline for local employers, so international candidates often compete in a market where employers have existing OPT-to-H-1B relationships. Prevailing wage requirements apply statewide and vary by metro area, with Twin Cities positions generally falling in higher wage tiers.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored data scientist jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
